    The Associate Director of Development is a critical member of Heart of Los Angeles’ leadership team, working collaboratively with the Chief Development Officer to develop and execute fundraising strategies for Heart of Los Angeles and to oversee a development department with a staff of seven. The Associate Director of Development will focus on donor engagement strategies for meeting the organization’s core operating budget, including leading annual and major gifts programs, as well as the fundraising and stewardship events calendar. They will directly supervise the Senior Events Coordinator and the Donor Relations Coordinator, as well as collaborate closely with and provide some strategic direction to the institutional giving and corporate relations teams. The position requires strong project management skills, exceptional strategic and systems-thinking skills, excellent coaching, mentoring, and management skills, and stellar written and verbal communication skills. The candidate should be comfortable talking to both large groups and individuals. They will be responsible for front-line fundraising with donors at various levels and will manage their own portfolio of 50-100 high-capacity prospects.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Collaborate with the Chief Development Officer to create and implement an annual development plan and donor strategies to raise an annual budget of approximately $9 million.
    • Oversee the development and delivery of meaningful cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship activities for current and prospective donors, including direct mail, online giving programs, and others.
    • Strategically design portfolios of high-capacity donors and prospects for the Chief Development Officer and Chief Executive Officer, and manage a robust portfolio directly.
    • Cultivate and steward individual, corporate, foundation, and community partner relationships to build visibility, impact, and financial resources for the organization.
    • Lead holiday/year-end giving campaign with support from the Donor Relations Coordinator.
    • Work with the Donor Relations Coordinator to maintain annual giving efforts and create additional segmented donor programs such as recurring gifts program, young donors program, pathways for volunteer-to-donor stewardship, etc.
    • Lead planning and execution of special events for the organization including annual spring gala; continue to build out an annual calendar of stewardship and fundraising events.
    • Directly manage the Senior Events Coordinator and the Donor Relations Coordinator; collaborate with the Chief Development Officer on oversight of institutional giving and volunteer and corporate relations teams as appropriate.
    • Provide overall strategic advisement to Heart of Los Angeles’ executive team and Board from the perspective of resource development.
    • Lead the creation of donor-facing assets in collaboration with the communications team.
    • Ensure data integrity and accuracy of Heart of Los Angeles’ donor database (EveryAction), and design moves management protocols.
    • Review all giving data, create monthly major donor status reports, and identify trends and successes related to new initiatives.
    • Other relevant departmental and organizational duties as assigned.

    QUALIFICATIONS | TRAITS AND CHARACTERISTICS DESIRED:

    • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or equivalent experience required
    • 4+ years of progressive experience as a non-profit fundraiser, including managing individual donors
    • Proven success in securing five-figure gifts or higher
    • Supervisory and management experience
    • Demonstrates compassion, responsibility and maturity
    • Excellent listening skills, including the ability to reflect understanding back to others
    • Positive attitude, flexible mindset, and outstanding leadership and management skills; ability to be a strong role model for staff and youth during all working hours and embody Heart of Los Angeles’ core operating values
    • A proven ability to establish, maintain and deepen relationships that contribute to the increasing visibility, impact, and financial resources of an organization over time
    • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
    • Strong knowledge of donor development software
    • Computer skills: Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint
    • Detail-oriented, highly organized strategic thinker; able to set and meet goals and deadlines
    • Motivated, independent self-starter with the ability to multitask
    • Ability to exercise considerable judgment and discretion in establishing and maintaining confidentiality and good working relationships
    • Ability and willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends
    • Commitment to the organizational mission and sensitivity to the needs of underserved youth
    • Must pass CA DOJ background check

    COMPENSATION:

    • This is a full time, exempt position
    • Salary is $90,000 per annum
