    Neighborhood Land Power Project’s mission is to build a neighborhood rooted food and land system through community leadership development and land-based strategies in West Philadelphia.

    Position Summary: Lead Land Steward

    The Lead Land Steward is responsible for maintaining and developing regenerative growing practices and projects at Neighborhood Foods (NF) farm and supporting maintenance at our gardens and parks for neighbors in West Philly. They will work closely with NLPP staff and members in creating collective and collaborative spaces to engage neighbors, members, community groups and volunteers and expand NLPP’s food sovereignty and land justice practices.

    Reports to: Interim Executive Director

    Pay and Benefits: $20.45/hour, 40 hours per week with a $200 monthly fringe benefit stipend

    Status: Non-Exempt, full time

    Role Expectations:

    • Support sustainable food production at NF Farm including trellising, pruning, turning beds, pest control, fertilizing, planting, irrigation, compost, etc.
    • Support maintenance and natural beauty at NF Farm, gardens and parks including: weeding, trash pickup, maintaining and organizing common spaces / refrigerator / sheds, tool management
    • Support harvest day coordination alongside Staff and members
    • Contribute to fostering a thoughtful, educational, kind and collective-work community space; ensure that neighbors, members, volunteers, and partners feel welcome, engaged, and invested in all of NLPP’s sites
    • Collaborate with fellow staff and members to support membership, recruitment and development through skills and knowledge sharing, hands-on work, farm tours, events, etc.
    • Organize, hire, delegate tasks to members, volunteers, etc. to support NF farm and sites
    • Lead and support winter planning and projects at NF Farm (I.e. high tunnel repairs, structure needs, growing starts, tending to cover crop)
    • Participate in and support organizational meetings, retreats, events, programs and planning
    • Seek opportunities for personal and professional growth that forwards NLPP’s work and strategy
    • All other tasks as assigned by the Interim Executive Director.

    Qualifications:

    • Education: High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalency, and some continuing education (i.e. trade/vocational school, college, internship, on the job training).
    • Experience: at least one year of growing experience at a farm or garden. Experience with urban farming, working in an urban environment and use of regenerative growing practices preferred
    • Skills: Communicate effectively and work collectively in a team environment. Ability to implement regenerative growing practices at an urban farm. Ability to problem-solve and be solution focused.
    • Abilities: Lift 50 pounds; walk, stand, kneel, drive and bend for long periods of time; work in varying weather conditions; and engage in strenuous tasks while modeling endurance and emotional intelligence.
    • Characteristics: Commitment to racial, economic, environmental and social justice; respect for people of all cultures and backgrounds; open to personal growth and new experiences; and demonstrate a passion for working alongside youth and community members.
    • Requirements: Have a Driver’s License and clean driving record; can pass all background checks as required by the organization for working with youth.
    • Preference: Living within the Haddington neighborhood or in a neighboring community is a plus.

    Working conditions: This role requires flexibility in scheduling throughout the season. Early morning, evening, and weekend work may be required. We work in an outdoor urban environment in all weather conditions.
