    JOB POSTING

Position Title: Senior Attorney for Enforcement Program

    Location: Washington, DC or Remote

    Date Posted: July 18, 2025

BACKGROUND ON THE ENVIRONMENTAL INTEGRITY PROJECT

The Environmental Integrity Project (EIP) is America’s environmental watchdog. We are a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting public health and our natural resources by holding polluters and government agencies accountable under the law. We advocate for tough but fair environmental standards and empower communities fighting for clean air and water.

Our team of lawyers, analysts, communications staff, and engineers provide support to communities fighting David vs. Goliath battles against some of the biggest polluters in the U.S. We sue not only corporations that don’t follow the law, but also federal and state agencies when they fail to do their jobs protecting the environment.

    POSITION OVERVIEW

EIP is accepting applications for a Senior Attorney to join our team working to hold industrial polluters and federal and state agencies accountable for compliance with environmental laws. The Senior Attorney will support EIP’s Enforcement Program and work to reduce pollution from industrial sources through citizen suit enforcement actions and other advocacy strategies. EIP takes legal action to clean up pollution; we publish data-driven reports that push federal and state regulators to better protect public health; and we work with frontline communities to provide them with the resources they need to obtain the protection of our environmental laws.

EIP is a national organization with strong partnerships with frontline communities and organizations in the Gulf States, Ohio River Valley, Midwest, and Mid-Atlantic regions. We are dedicated to reducing the enormous amount of climate, air, and water pollution generated by the fossil fuel power sector and industries that extract, store, or process oil or natural gas to make fuel, chemicals and plastics, fertilizers, and other petrochemical products. EIP work also targets pollution from other sectors, including steel manufacturing, aluminum production, and landfills and trash incinerators.

The Senior Attorney position will support these programs and can be based in Washington, DC or remote. The position will require occasional travel throughout the U.S.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Develop, analyze, and execute enforcement and other legal strategies to reduce pollution.
    • Perform a range of litigation and legal tasks to support litigation and other advocacy efforts, including: legal research; drafting comments, complaints, motions, briefs, and discovery requests and responses; and oral advocacy.
    • Work with internal and external experts to develop factual, technical, and scientific support for citizen suit enforcement actions and other advocacy efforts.
    • Represent EIP and other organizations in federal and state litigation, administrative proceedings, and public meetings.
    • Manage client relationships and work effectively within coalitions.
    • Draft grant proposals and reports.
    • Work with EIP’s communications and research teams to develop and execute communications strategies and reports.

    QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

    • A law degree and active bar membership in good standing.
    • 8+ years of legal experience, including experience in environmental law. Strong preference for attorneys with experience enforcing violations of environmental laws.
    • Excellent analytical, research, writing, organizational, oral communication, and interpersonal skills.
    • Passion for protecting public health and the environment.
    • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and external partners.
    • Prior experience or demonstrated commitment to working with members of communities directly impacted by pollution.
    • Strong work ethic, robust problem-solving skills, and sound judgment.

    COMPENSATION

EIP offers competitive salaries, excellent benefits, and a supportive working environment. Salary is based on a nonprofit scale and is commensurate with skills and experience. For this position, the salary range is $105,000 - $135,000.

    EQUAL OPPORTUNITY

EIP is an equal opportunity employer. As an equal opportunity employer, EIP is committed to employment practices that ensure that employees and applicants for employment are provided with equal opportunities without regard to race, color, national origin, ancestry, sex, age, religion, physical or mental disability, medical condition, veteran status, marital status, pregnancy, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, genetic information or any other factor that is not related to the position.
