Position Title: Communications Assistant 

 Organization: National Communication Association 

 Position Type: Full-Time 

Summary:  

The National Communication Association seeks a proactive and dynamic individual to join the team as a Communications Assistant. This position will be crucial in supporting the communication efforts of NCA, the leading organization dedicated to advancing research, teaching, and communication practice. This includes, but is not limited to, developing compelling written and visual content for various communication channels, including the website, social media, newsletters, and press releases; coordinating member outreach efforts, including drafting member notifications and announcements; and updating content on the NCA website.  

 

Primary Responsibilities: 

 External Communication / Public Relations 

  •  Manage COMMNotes, NCA’s daily community email newsletter. 
  • Support the Communications Manager in coordinating member outreach efforts, including drafting member notifications and announcements. 
  • Assist in promoting and covering NCA’s Annual Convention, events, and initiatives through various communication channels. 
  • Assist in developing compelling written and visual content for various communication channels, including the website, social media, newsletters, online magazines, and press releases. 
  • Assist in the development of The NCA Podcast. 

 Web / Digital Media 

  •  Work with the communications team to help manage NCA's social media accounts, including content scheduling, monitoring engagement, and responding to inquiries. 
  • Work with the Web and Digital Media Associate to update and maintain content on the NCA website to ensure accuracy and relevance. 

 General Duties  

  •  To inform communication strategies, keep current on communication trends, best practices, and relevant news. 
  • Provide general support to the communications team, including meeting management, maintaining member contact lists, and managing communication tools. 
  • Other duties/tasks as assigned.  

 Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's degree in Communication, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Ability to multi-task while working for deadlines. 
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment. 
  • Proficiency in using social media platforms for professional purposes. 
  • Basic graphic design skills and familiarity with design tools such as Canva or Adobe Creative Suite is a plus. 
  • Knowledge of the field of Communication and familiarity with academic organizations is desirable. 
  • Knowledge of and proficiency with various computer software applications, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. 
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.

Work Mode:  

  • The National Communication Association (NCA) operates in a hybrid work mode, with two days in the office and three days at telework. Staff are expected to be in the office on Tuesdays for strategic planning and other ongoing discussions with the Executive Director. The work mode is regularly reviewed to meet the association's evolving needs. Such review may necessitate changing a position’s mode of work designation.
