Museum Security Officers

Norman Rockwell Museum is seeking part time year-round and seasonal Museum Security Officers. Must be available for weekend coverage and flexible weekday hours along with evening events as needed. Compensation is $18.00 per hour.

The Position

Museum security officers help to provide a safe environment for museum employees and visitors and to safeguard the art and equipment by protecting the Museum from all types of threats such as theft, fire or any other type of danger. They must be people-oriented individuals with an interest in art culture as they are often asked about the artwork on view.

Duties & Responsibilities

Museum security officers handle a variety of duties and responsibilities, such as the following:

• Create friendly, safe, and welcoming environment for Museum visitors, staff, and patrons
• Demonstrate awareness and sensitivity to unconscious cultural or racial bias as relates to visitor identity groups
• Ensure Museum security protocols while walking through the galleries, or patrolling the outdoors
• Engaging with staff and visitors by answering their questions while ensuring they do not approach too closely or touch the artwork
•  Guide traffic and wayfinding for visitors
• Provide crowd control and security for all major museum events or programs as scheduled
• Expertly handle emergencies, reporting any hazardous conditions or irregularities to the appropriate personnel or safety officials
• Monitor the surveillance systems such as the CCTV system
•  Assist facilities in pre-event set-up and after event clean-up and removal of equipment
• Oversee the safety and security of objects, assets, and equipment
• Help with light housekeeping duties
• Participate in ongoing emergency health and safety training, and anti-bias awareness education
• Support COVID-19 safety protocols as required

Qualifications

Must be comfortable standing/walking for several hours at a time during a shift. Must have strong verbal communication skills and commitment to excellent customer service by interacting well with others. Ability to navigate inclement weather conditions to ensure security of the Museum galleries and to work under high public demand.

Experience/Education: At least one-year experience in a customer service, custodial and/or security related position. High school diploma or GED.
