SurfAid is a non-profit international development organization founded in 2000 with a mission to improve the health, well-being, and resilience of people living in isolated regions connected to us through surfing. Our locally-led programs in the Indo-Pacific focus on providing access to clean water and sanitation, basic healthcare, and improved nutrition. About the Role

Are you a motivated and passionate development professional with a proven ability to secure funds and cultivate lasting relationships? Do you excel at identifying opportunities and converting them into substantial support for causes you are passionate about? If so, SurfAid invites you to join our team as a Development Manager (Fundraising). In this pivotal role, you will drive our fundraising initiatives, playing a crucial part in ensuring the financial sustainability and growth of our organization. As a key member of our team, you will be at the forefront of our mission to make a significant impact.  

As our Development Manager (Fundraising), you will identify and secure funding from major donors, grants, foundations, and corporate partners by:

  • Identify Opportunities: Prospect and develop new funding sources, constantly seeking innovative ways to support our mission.
  • Cultivate Relationships: Build and maintain strong, positive relationships with key stakeholders, ensuring they feel valued and engaged.
  • Manage Grants: Oversee the grant application process from start to finish, ensuring all requirements are met and opportunities maximized.
  • Track and Analyze Data: Use Salesforce to track all fundraising activity from prospecting to relationship management to closed opportunities. Use this data to inform priorities and fundraising strategies going forward.

Responsibilities - Key areas of focus % 

Fundraising Strategy - 10%

  • Global Strategy Contribution: Collaborate as part of the SurfAid HQ global team (including the CEO, Global Fundraising and Marketing Director and Head of Donors and Partners) to develop and implement comprehensive fundraising strategies.
  • Market Analysis: Analyze fundraising trends in the U.S. and other key markets.
  • Budgeting: Prepare the yearly fundraising budget. 
  • Evaluation: Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of fundraising approaches.

Secure Funding - 70%

  • Major Donors: Engage with new high-net-worth individuals to secure major gifts and long-term commitments.
  • Board engagement and support: Work with all board members to cultivate their networks and create tailored fundraising strategies for their connections.
  • Grant Applications: identify, cultivate, and submit grant proposals for philanthropic opportunities, inclusive of private foundations, family foundations, corporate programs, and government grants.
  • Data Collection and Storytelling: Work with program staff to gather quantitative impact data and the communications team on qualitative narratives for compelling proposals.
  • Documentation: Ensure all supporting documents are accurate and up-to-date.

Admin and Other - 20%

  • Salesforce Documentation: Keep donor interactions and activities updated in Salesforce.
  • Reporting: Prepare reports on fundraising activities and financial performance.
  • Program Understanding: Maintain in-depth knowledge of SurfAid's programs and impact.

Selection Criteria: Qualifications & Experience 

  • Proven Experience: At least 3-5 years of experience in development and fundraising, with a strong emphasis on securing major gifts and generating new income for a non-profit. You should have a successful track record in developing and implementing fundraising strategies that result in significant financial growth. The ideal candidate would have extensive experience in at least one of the following areas. If they did not have experience in the other area they would be willing to develop their skills: 
  • Major Donor Expertise: Demonstrated success in identifying, cultivating, and soliciting major donors for five and six figure gifts. You should have a deep understanding of major donor dynamics, including the ability to engage and steward high-net-worth individuals effectively.
  • Grant Writing Proficiency: Experience in writing and managing grant applications, with a proven ability to secure funding from foundations and other grant-making entities. You should be adept at navigating the entire grant lifecycle, from research and proposal writing to reporting and compliance.
  • Corporate Partnership Development: Experience in developing and maintaining corporate partnerships, including sponsorships and cause-related marketing initiatives. You should be able to identify mutually beneficial opportunities and create compelling proposals that resonate with corporate partners.
  • Strategic Thinking: Strong strategic planning skills, with the ability to analyze fundraising trends, identify opportunities, and develop innovative approaches to secure new funding. You should be comfortable setting and achieving ambitious financial goals.
  • Relationship Building: Exceptional interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders, including major donors, corporate partners, foundation representatives, and community leaders. You should be a persuasive communicator with the ability to inspire and engage others.
  • Results-Oriented: A self-starter with a strong sense of initiative and the ability to work independently along with in a team. You should be highly organized, detail-oriented, and capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Passion for the Cause: A genuine belief in our mission and a strong desire to contribute to our success. You should be motivated by the opportunity to make a meaningful impact to the lives of people in remote communities connected to surfing. 

Job Type 

The role is a part-time fixed-term role for 20 hours per week for 12 months commencing in September 2024. 

Location

The role is remote with a preference for a CA or West Coast base.
