Youth Programs Instructor – Neighborhood Bikes Works

 

Neighborhood Bike Works (NBW) is a nonprofit organization that provides educational, recreational, and career-building opportunities for urban youth in underserved neighborhoods in greater Philadelphia through bicycling. By learning bicycle mechanics and exploring the city by bike, young people at NBW build life skills and healthy habits, and gain leadership experience. It also promotes cycling as a healthy, affordable, environment-friendly form of transportation. NBW uses bikes as the hook to engage youth in positive out-of-school-time activities. In addition to our youth programs, NBW provides a DIY community bicycle workshop space for adults as well as community outreach programs to promote cycling.

Position Summary:

This is a Full-Time, 40-hour/week, hourly, position teaching classes in our Youth Bike Education & Empowerment Program (YBEEP) during school time, out-of-school time throughout the school year, and summer. Through YBEEP, youth engage in bike-related activities while gaining skills in positive youth development. The Programs Instructor is responsible for teaching entry-level programs including Earn-A-Bike and Summer Camp sessions and graduate-level programs such as Leadership and Advanced Mechanics, Monthly Rides, Freedom Riders, and weekly Drop-In program. The position also provides administrative support to the Youth Programs Department.

Reports to: Youth Programs Director

Dates: The position starts in mid-late July 2024.

Responsibilities:

● Teach bike repair classes and bike safety lessons according to the Earn-A-Bike curriculum for groups of youth ages 8-18 in after-school, weekend, and summer programs

o Lead classes on bike mechanics, using NBW’s curriculum and integrating activities, games, and bike rides into each course series to encourage participation and

engagement of all youth

o Model and teach bike safety rules including but not limited to wearing a helmet and adhering to rules of the road for cyclists

o Ensure safety of all youth in the shop and on bike rides

o Ensure that each Earn-A-Bike bicycle is completed and safety checked before it leaves the shop

o Exude a positive attitude and set the tone for a fun and exciting class experience

● Manage program planning and implementation for each class session.

o Support the Youth Programs Director in managing class recruitment, enrollment, application intake, and other documentation to ensure that each session is filled

o Communicate with caregivers regarding class schedule and structure, student’s progress/behavior, upcoming opportunities, and ways to stay connected with NBW and deepen the experience for the youth

o Track and input class and student-related data.

o Other administrative tasks as assigned to support class enrollment and retention

●       Supervise and engage Adult and Youth Assistant Instructors by providing them with tasks, support, and oversight.

o Assist in recruitment, interview process, and hiring of Adult and Youth Assistant Instructors

o Provide on-going training, constructive feedback, and support to mentor and encourage the professional development of adult and youth assistants

● Supervise and engage program volunteers by providing them with tasks, support, and oversight

        ● Communicate with NBW’s Youth Program Manager about volunteer needs, assist with scheduling

            volunteers, and assist with training and oversight of new YBEEP volunteers

 o Regularly communicate with volunteers to keep them engaged and involved throughout the year

● Support NBW’s administrative and programmatic needs

o Collaborate with the Youth Programs Director to assess and create new opportunities to engage youth

o Manage and maintain program supplies needed for youth programs such as tools, fleet bikes and other administrative tasks as needed

Qualifications:

●      Preference given to skilled bike mechanics

●      Youth work or education experience required

●      Candidates should be able to demonstrate ability and cultural competencies in working with diverse groups of youth

●      Candidates should be upbeat, reliable,  punctual, flexible, collaborative, extremely detail-oriented, self-motivated, and enjoy working with and mentoring young people

●       Excellent interpersonal communication. skills both written and verbal

●      Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs

●      Must be able to ride a bike for a distance of at least 5 miles

●       Successful passing of PA State Criminal Background Check, Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance, and FBI Clearance required

Schedule and Hours:

● 40 hours per week

● Schedule dependent on programming schedule

●      Position includes after-school hours (4-6pm) and some weekend hours (Saturdays 10:00 am-2:00 pm)

 

Compensation:

● This is a 40 hours/week non-exempt hourly position, $16-$20 per hour

● Paid vacation time

        ● NBW offers an additional 8 paid holidays off (Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, etc.) plus 2 additional

            paid holidays chosen by the employee.

        ●  NBW is closed between Christmas and New Year’s and staff receives regular pay during that time
