ONE Northside is seeking an energetic and highly organized Environmental Equity Organizer to join a staff team to organize community members to create and implement an audacious agenda to ensure low income people and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) community members benefit from the transition to the green economy. This staff member will have the opportunity to build a powerful and diverse team of community members to join with partners from across Illinois to fight for effective and equitable implementation of the newly passed Climate and Equitable Jobs Act (CEJA). A successful candidate for this position is an individual who is detail-oriented and able to juggle multiple projects, is willing to go out in the community and build powerful relationships, and has an interest in working with a diverse group of people and engaging in organizing for change on the local, city and federal level. An ideal candidate is someone with an appetite to be a community organizer, build power, and who is rooted in a deep commitment to racial and social justice.  


POSITION SUMMARY

The ONE Northside Environmental Equity Organizer will recruit and organize a new group of community members interested in environmental justice and equity, green jobs for under-employed people, and ensuring effective implementation of CEJA in Illinois. This will involve regular door to door canvassing and phone banking, coalition work, and organizing marginalized populations in the community. The organizer will do this by building relationships within our member institutions (especially agencies that work with people who are formerly incarcerated and seeking jobs), people living in affordable housing, individuals and the broader community; working to identify leaders and develop their leadership abilities; organizing and attending issue and other organizational meetings; working with identified leadership to coordinate comprehensive strategies; organizing campaigns around identified issues; conducting research, writing press releases, preparing written materials, participating in regular reflection; assisting with organizational actions and trainings; and other tasks as needed.


RESPONSIBILITIES

Organizing

●       Reach out to residents in local affordable housing buildings, agencies that support job seekers and formerly incarcerated individuals, high school students, residents, organizations, ethnic associations and public institutions about ONE Northside’s campaigns and efforts to create change in public policies

●       Build a diverse team of interested community members to develop and drive ONE Northside Environmental Equity campaign(s).

●       Coordinate with Environmental Equity Team, Organizing Director and allies to develop organizing strategies and campaigns concerning ONE Northside’s priorities

●       Conduct research on issues important to the organization and our campaigns, research issues raised by members, and train community members to do research themselves.

●       Develop plans for and execute meetings with members to create action strategies and plans for winning on issues and achieving goals.

●       Mentor and lead members in carrying out agreed upon roles and strategies to win concrete victories.

●       Create and lead popular education and skill building trainings to develop the leadership of members.  

●       Meet with community members on issues impacting them, determine their needs, and implement strategies to sign them up as dues-paying members and emerging leaders in the organization.

●       Work one-on-one with identified leaders to build their leadership abilities

●       Work with leaders to participate in city and statewide coalitions


Administration/Fundraising

●       Prepare written reports, meeting summaries, press releases, and related materials as they pertain to the work

●       Support fundraising efforts of the organization: assist in identifying and drafting grant proposals and reports, participate in and prepare leaders for site visits, help plan fundraising events, and identify donors. 

●       Plan and execute logistics for community outreach events and strategies to recruit new institutional and individual members

●       Assist the Executive Director with other tasks, as assigned


QUALIFICATIONS

●       Excellent written and verbal communication skills

●       Some community organizing experience required

●       Familiarity with a diverse range of organizing tactics and strategies

●       Proven ability to work with a diverse constituency, across lines of race, class, nationality, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, religion and other differences

●       Excellent writing and interpersonal communication skills

●       Serious appetite and excitement to go door-to-door, make calls, meet new community members and bring them into the work

●       Effective and creative problem solver

●       Deep self-interest in building relationships with low income people, Black, Indigenous and other People of Color, under-employed individuals, formerly incarcerated individuals

●       Takes initiative and charge of their schedule and work

●       Ability to work independently and as part of a team

●       Ability to meet deadlines

●       Excellent computer skills

●       Innovative, creative, mature thinking and reasoning

●       Must be a motivated self-starter

●       Demonstrated commitment to the profession of community organizing

●       Not afraid to use confrontation as a tactic for winning justice

●       Commitment to training and agitation methodology as a tool for growth and accountability

●       BA degree or equivalent life experience

●       Fluency in a second language is a plus

●       Having a car is preferred

Commensurate with experience

Compensación

●            Comprehensive benefits package includes: employer paid medical and dental insurance; 10 paid vacation days, 3 personal days, 12 wellness day and 18 days of paid holiday time per year; 401K eligibility after one year with an employer contribution of 4% of salary.
