Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking candidates for the position of Grant Writer. In support of the Development and Global Outreach Department, the Grant Writer will increase our fundraising efforts through grant and report writing, data gathering, cultivation of new funders, and strategic collaboration with programmatic staff. This full-time position is part of the Foundations & Program Liaison Office, a unit of the Development & Global Outreach Department. The position may be based in any of HRW’s offices in the United States or Europe, and reports to one of the Associate Directors in the Foundations & Program Liaison Office. 

Due to COVID-19, many of our global offices are currently closed or operating in reduced capacities. The successful candidate may be required to work remotely initially, or as local mandates require. We recognize that this moment, during the COVID-19 pandemic, is a uniquely difficult time for most people, particularly those with caregiving responsibilities, and we aim to be as flexible and supportive as possible in both the recruitment for and onboarding of this position.


1. Research and write proposals, stewardship reports and other materials for existing and prospective donors;

2. Assemble budgets and financial reports in collaboration with Finance Department staff;

3. Develop relationships with HRW’s programmatic staff to keep abreast of research and advocacy projects and incorporate them into grant writing;

4. Form relationships with foundations’ program officers to facilitate the production of grant proposals; 

5. Identify and solicit new sources of support by matching HRW’s programs with donors’ funding priorities; 

6. Assist in the development of strategy for cultivating grants from donors;

7. Ensure that fundraising goals are met and that reporting requirements to donors are fulfilled in a timely manner;

8. Monitor progress against milestones and outputs promised to donors in grant agreements;

9. Operate in compliance with organizational regulations and rules, including the policies of applicable employee agreements; and

10. Perform other tasks as may be required. 


Education: A bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience is required. 

Experience: A minimum of three years of grant writing, editing, or fundraising experience. 

Related Skills and Knowledge:  

1. Excellent written and oral communications skills in English are required. 

2. The ability to assimilate and convey conceptually complicated information in a succinct and compelling way, tailored to different audiences, is required. 

3. Familiarity with and demonstrated commitment to international human rights is highly desirable. 

4. Strong interpersonal skills to work collaboratively within HRW, as well as with external partners, are required.

5. Ability to think creatively, take initiative, and drive to follow-through is required.

6. Excellent time-management skills and the ability to prioritize and complete work under pressure are required. 

7. Grant writing experience in an international organization and familiarity with the international human rights donor community are strongly preferred.
