Senior Director, People & Culture for a 50- employee (and growing) remote education non-profit providing professional learning to K-12 educators nationally 

Type of Vacancy: Salaried, full-time

Start date: Immediate

Location: Remote/home office anywhere in the United States

Report to: Chief Operating Officer 

Supervise: Current and future HR staff members

Compensation: Salary starts at $118,000, with comprehensive benefits. Salary is commensurate with experience.

The Senior Director, People & Culture will develop and execute on human resource strategy in support of the broader organizational strategic direction and objectives, specifically in the areas of staff training and development, racial equity initiatives, and continuing to build a culture where talented and mission- and values-aligned team members enjoy their work and grow professionally. They will manage three current staff members and, over time, will build out and manage teams specializing in talent acquisition, HR administration, staff development, and employee experience.  As a rapidly growing nonprofit, we seek an experienced human resources leader who is excited about and is a champion of equity and inclusion and embedding these values into Teaching Lab’s day-to-day work across all facets of HR. Eligible candidates must have proven HR expertise and background within scaling organizations with significant time spent working with highly effective and driven executive teams, hold and can model strong emotional intelligence, have a strong vision for building and further growing equity and inclusion-focused organizations, and significant people management experience. Ideal candidates are effective coaches and collaborators for learning, have strong business acumen, possess exceptional strategic thinking capabilities, have an eye for designing efficient processes and systems, demonstrate drive and proactiveness, and effectively manage up as needed to execute on strategies. Above all, any candidate must have a demonstrated commitment to racial and educational equity. This position has high potential for both large-scale impact and career growth.

The Senior Director, People & Culture will engage in the following:


  • Set, evolve, and execute on a comprehensive vision and strategy for the HR function in alignment with strategic priorities and values to ensure that Teaching Lab’s workforce of 50+ employees and 200+ annual contractors are effectively meeting their role-based goals, satisfied with their working experience and environment, actively contribute to an equitable work environment, and strategically retained
  • Design, lead, and implement plans to continuously train and develop staff members in key skills and competencies to perform their current roles and grow into new, progressing roles 
  • Lead the development, implementation, and monitoring of our equity goals as well as a learning and action plan to build staff members’ equity lens and to ensure that equity work is embedded in our day-to-day work
  • Design, lead and support key organizational-wide and affinity group learning in racial equity, including managing relationships with external partners as needed to deliver training and support to achieve our goals
  • Create vision for and execute strategy for employee engagement to foster a culture of performance, accountability and collaboration for all employees in a virtual, multi-state, and growing organization
  • Partner with the Executive Team and people managers to address escalated HR operational issues such as employee relations, compensation reviews, and performance management; provide insightful crisis management advice, when required
  • Ensure the organization’s values are reflected in people-oriented decisions
  • Drive the change management of the organization through intentional communications and equitable and participatory processes
  • Lead further development of organizational values and role competencies
  • Provide overall leadership, management and guidance to HR function staff members who are overseeing talent acquisition, operations/administration, staff development, and employee experience. 


  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Human Resources Management, Organizational Psychology, or relevant field; SHRM/PHR certification is a plus
  • 10+ years of proven experience in Human Resources or organizational development 
  • A strong track record of experience and results as a trusted member of an organization’s senior leadership team 
  • Deep content knowledge of the diversity, equity, and inclusiveness research base and best practices for organizations striving to become more diverse, equitable, and inclusive
  • A demonstrable commitment to pursuing equity
  •  In-depth knowledge of all HR functions
  • Good understanding of labor relation
  • Background in education is not necessary, but must be curious about topics in PK-12 education and committed to advancing educational equity
  • Strong commitment to Teaching Lab’s organizational mission and values in pursuit of educational equity 
  • Demonstrate proficiencies in Teaching Lab competencies
  • Understand how to leverage senior leaders and Board members to execute on strategies; competence in working across functions and managing up, as needed
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills to interact effectively with others at all levels of the organization
  • Exceptionally strong at building trusting relationships and creating strong team morale
  • Ability to hold colleagues to a high bar for equity, and creating thriving cultures
  • Ability to give and receive feedback to increase performance and outcomes
  • Collaborative and highly flexible approach, having the ability and desire to both lead and support other staff members’ efforts
  • Strong attention to detail; organized and systematic and capable of balancing competing priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Reliable and consistently complete high quality work in a timely manner


All roles at Teaching Lab are contingent on business needs.
