The Individual Major Gifts Manager will serve as the primary staff person, under the direction of the Chief Philanthropy Officer, responsible for leading efforts in expanding and stewarding our individuals and family foundation relationships who give $500+ annually with the primary goal to increase revenue and outreach results.

Do you love libraries and want to work at one of the most well-known buildings in San José?  The San José Public Library is proud to be one of the nation’s best public library systems with 25 branches across the city.  Part of its success is owed to the dynamic and committed Library Foundation, which is a separate 501(c)3 established in 1987 by a group of community volunteers who understood that a great library system needed more than public funding. The San José Public Library Foundation (SJPLF) has raised more than $45 million to enhance the Library above and beyond what tax-based funding provides for buildings, programs, collections, and services.  The Foundation takes its fundraising direction from the Library’s identification of persistent and emerging community needs.  Our mutually respectful and collaborative work will result in more students being prepared for success from kindergarten to college and career; more adults being fully informed and able to participate in civic life; greater access to information in print and digital forms; and for everyone to find the spark that ignites their curiosity, imagination, and wonder. 


60% of your time – Individual Giving Leadership (portfolio: $500+ annual gift donors) 

  • Responsible for raising $150,000+ in year one, $280,000+ in year two, and $350,000+ in subsequent years in individual and family foundation gifts. We have confidence this is an attainable goal with warm prospects ready for cultivation. 
  • Manage an active portfolio of donors and prospects by creating and implementing personalized cultivation and stewardship plans and gift requests for each donor within portfolio. 
  • Work with Board & Executive Assistant to track board pledges and provide board resource kits for board’s personal fundraising efforts and staff CEO on soliciting board who have capacity to give major gifts.  
  • Successfully steward current individual donor relationships towards renewal by managing appropriate frequency of outreach, communication, and involvement 
  • Show your portfolio of donors the impact of their contributions by connecting them to engagement opportunities and maintaining ongoing connection. 
  • Gather information to prepare renewal proposals and progress reports. 
  • Oversee annual stewardship gift recognition for 25+, 20+, 15+, 10+, and 5+ year donors.  
  • Identify, design, and lead opportunities to engage new major gifts. 
  • Determine priorities of donor(s) and solicit. 

20% of your time – Manage and grow Epilogue Society (planned giving) program 

  • Lead efforts to identify and cultivate new legacy donors including coordination of communications to attract new legacy gifts. 
  • Coordinate estate planning workshops twice per year.  
  • Manage FreeWill partnership and legacy gifts software 

 10% of your time – Lead community fundraiser efforts 

  •  Coordinate and/or delegate logistics for any small donor cultivation events throughout the year (i.e. house parties) so they serve as successful cultivation tool for major gift prospects 
  • Work with community members who want to run their own smaller scale fundraising campaigns. 
  • Oversee plaque and/or building name recognitions or unveilings in collaboration with CPO and city. 

10% of your time - Administrative support and Other Duties as Required:  

  • Record contacts with prospects and donors into CRM software  
  • Pull reports to track ROI and inform strategy. 
  • Lead the efforts in individual and family foundation $500+ proposals and meetings including developing PowerPoint presentations, calendar coordination, ordering materials, revising content, printing packets, and putting materials together.

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in Non-Profit development work with demonstrated ability to cultivate and steward donors.  
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills are required as well as the ability to handle confidential information and multitask to accomplish duties in an efficient and timely manner.  
  • Must be able to function independently to complete tasks.  
  • Candidate must be computer literate and experienced in use of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.  
  • Candidate must be a strategic and collaborative thinker with an innovative, positive, and self-directed attitude – interested in figuring out solutions and able to work under pressure to meet deadlines. 

Helpful Experience:  

  • CFRE, a plus 
  • Knowledge of donor database software, eTapestry and/or Blackbaud products a plus 
  • Previous work in a diverse, team-oriented, and fast-paced environment 
  • Cross-cultural competence and experience working with community constituents of diverse economic, social, and cultural backgrounds. 
  • Spanish or Vietnamese bilingual fluency, written or oral communications skills, a plus

The vision requirement includes close vision.  The employee is occasionally required to lift 20 pounds.   

SJPLF currently operates in a hybrid working situation with in-office attendance required at least 40%.  


This is a full-time, exempt, position with a high degree of autonomy and opportunity for growth.  Salary range is $85,000 - $95,000 dependent upon experience.  SJPLF provides health, dental, and vision insurance, 401k with matching contribution, 17 paid holidays, and generous paid time off that increases with longevity, among other benefits.
