    Grant Writer

    Washington, DC or Los Angeles, CA

    The Public Interest Network is seeking a Grant Writer to join our central team responsible for fundraising from foundations, large donors and other institutions to support the organizations in our network and the campaigns we run to make positive change for our environment and the public interest.

    Key Responsibilities

    The Grant Writer’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

    • Writing and editing grant proposals, funder updates, grant reports, and other materials that promote our organizations’ programs, campaigns and values;
    • Researching and identifying foundation and donor prospects, and helping to maintain the information in our central database;
    • Supporting grantseekers for our organizations around the country, including training staff to be effective grantseekers, acting as a clearinghouse for advice and information on funding strategy and the funding community and working with The Public Interest Network’s management team to reach our overall grantseeking goals; and
    • Building the movement by recruiting staff for our organizations and supporting priority programs and projects, which could include a wide array of activities - from training entry-level staff to phone banking activists to helping with media events.

    This position requires exercising discretion and independent judgment in making decisions in matters of significance.

    Qualifications

    We are looking for writers ready to put their talent to work to help build a movement centered on the quality of the environment and our lives. Top candidates will have a bachelor’s degree and at least one year of relevant professional experience. Additionally, you would be a great fit for this position if you:

    • Are great at and love making a fundraising pitch, and have the ability to translate our campaigns and programs into written and verbal stories that get people’s heads nodding and hearts pumping. All finalists will be required to complete a writing and editing test;
    • Want to work hard and challenge yourself;
    • Sweat the details;
    • Like, and are excellent at, working with people but also thrive in a behind the scenes role;
    • Enjoy working creatively and independently, while also taking direction and working as part of a team; and
    • Most importantly, are passionate about making a difference on the issues we work on. Fundraising is hard and often thankless work with results that we won’t see until far into the future, so you need to be motivated by our shared belief that a clear vision, commonsense solutions, a fact-driven case for action, and the power of bringing people together are the necessary ingredients to any successful effort to solve society’s problems.

    The Grant Writer position requires a two-year commitment.

    Compensation & Benefits

    The target annual compensation range for candidates with 2-6 years of relevant experience is $37,000-$42,000. Candidates on the lower end of directly relevant experience should expect to be on the lower end of this range; candidates on the higher end of relevant experience are likely to be on the higher end of this range. The Public Interest Network offers an excellent benefits package. Our benefits package includes medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees and dependents, paid time off, a commuter benefit program, a 401(k) plan with employer match, parental leave, long term disability insurance, and may include needs-based student loan assistance. Why work for The Public Interest Network? Here are ten reasons: https://publicinterestnetwork.org/why-work-with-us/

    About The Public Interest Network

    The Public Interest Network operates and supports more than a dozen organizations – including PIRG, Environment America and their state affiliates – committed to a shared vision of a better world and a strategic approach to change.

    Our work focuses on the problems that arise from America’s single-minded pursuit of endless economic growth: We’re still burning fossil fuels even though it’s changing the climate. We keep giving antibiotics to healthy livestock, even though it leads to “superbugs” that are antibiotic-resistant. We use plastic products for a few minutes only to throw them away so they pollute the oceans for centuries.

    And our approach is unique: We focus on the big picture, but are relentlessly pragmatic and prioritize making a difference in people’s lives over making a statement. We work with everybody to make change happen, political ideology aside, championing good ideas wherever they come from. And we are serious about the work -- we set clear goals, benchmarks and systems to measure our progress, and hold ourselves accountable to making change now and building for the future.

    This unique approach gives our staff an opportunity to make a concrete difference for the environment and the public interest -- just as hundreds of dedicated staff have done over our 50 year history. If you want to add to this change-making legacy; if you have the passion and the drive that it takes; if you're looking for a mission, not just a job -- then let’s talk.

    Our Mission and Values
