Position Overview

This position must be willing to teach a range of science subject areas, including Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, and Earth Science.  With the support of a special education teacher, this position will also support students with special learning or emotional needs to ensure that they receive the level of instruction that they need to enable them to succeed. The worksite and tour of duty for this position are located in a juvenile detention center. 

Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities will include, but not be limited to: 

  • Teach content and skills in the subject area utilizing curriculum and other appropriate learning activities
  • Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment
  • Communicate with administration and colleagues about classroom challenges
  • Supervise students at all times during classes
  • Participate in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities
  • Administer testing in accordance with division testing practices
  • Model nondiscriminatory practices in all activities
  • Other duties as assigned

 Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in education or subject field (required)
  • Must have or be eligible for certification by DC OSSE in the appropriate content area (required within one (1) year of employment)
  • Experience working with incarcerated or opportunity youth (preferred)
  • Familiarity with research-based instructional strategies

Site Description

The Youth Services Center (YSC) is the District of Columbia’s detention center for male and female youth, responsible for the care and custody of young people placed in secure detention by court order from the DC Superior Court Family Court Division.

Our mission is to provide a safe, nurturing, and mutually respectful environment that motivates and prepares each student to fulfill his academic or career potential. With the support of a wide circle of caring adults, students will develop the skills they need to make sound decisions and lead rewarding lives.
