About MEA

MEA is a nonprofit law center that combines the power of law with the resolve of communities facing environmental injustice to secure and protect the rights of all people to healthy water, land and air. We provide legal services to communities with environmental concerns and seek to strengthen their power.

Fellowship Goals

The fellow will support the participation of young people and other impacted community members in legal, regulatory and policy decisions that will affect a livable and just environment for generations to come. The fellow will work with MEA’s current clients and partners and will also forge new relationships with youth-led organizations to fight for climate justice. The fellow’s legal work will support ongoing litigation and other advocacy efforts related to oil pipelines, renewable energy and transportation infrastructure. In addition to acting as an environmental attorney for young people, the fellow will also serve as a role model, helping young people envision how environmental advocacy could fit into their education, careers and daily lives moving forward.

Your Day to Day

  • Draft legal memoranda, briefs, motions and other documents in ongoing actions related to oil pipelines, renewable energy and transportation infrastructure and other matters.
  • Work with the communications director to develop education and outreach strategies to engage young people and other community members to help them build power to achieve climate justice.
  • Engage young people through presentations and workshops.
  • Work in coalition with a diverse set of partner organizations and community groups.

Qualifications

  • J.D. from an accredited law school and a license to practice law in the state of Wisconsin (or the willingness to become a member of the Wisconsin bar upon hire).
  • Neither previous environmental law experience nor post-law school legal experience is required to be considered for this position.
  • Awareness of and respect for the needs and concerns of individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds and orientations.
  • Knowledge of or connection to communities that have historically been denied meaningful input into environmental decision-making.
  • A commitment to MEA’s mission, to environmental stewardship and to empowering young people and other groups disproportionately impacted by climate change.
  • Excellent research, writing and oral communication skills.
  • High-level organizational and time management skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently to manage multiple goals while effectively communicating and collaborating within a team structure.

The starting date of this position is flexible, and the exact date will depend on the progression of our hiring process, the candidate's needs and other variables.
