Nobel Women’s Initiative (NWI)uses the prestige of the Nobel Peace Prize and courageous women peace laureates to increase the power and visibility of women’s movements working globally for peace, justice, and equality. We work to strengthen and expand feminist efforts to promote nonviolent solutions to war, violence, and militarism. The Initiative is led by Nobel peace laureates Jody Williams (USA), Shirin Ebadi (Iran), Rigoberta Menchú Tum (Guatemala), Leymah Gbowee (Liberia), and Tawakkol Karman (Yemen).

 

 

SCOPE OF WORK:

The Head of Media and Communications will find effective and creative ways to use the spotlight and access that comes with receiving the Nobel Peace Prize to focus attention on and amplify the work and solutions of women human rights defenders and feminist peacebuilders — especially those from conflict regions.  

 

You will use the voice and access of the women Nobel peace laureates to draw media and global policy attention towards issues and the movements working to resolve them.

 

You will be a partner to the Executive Director and a key member of the staff leadership. 

 

Building on and developing Nobel Women’s Initiative’s creative approaches, including podcasts, books, feature-length and short documentary filmsphotography and multimedia exhibits, ‘artivism,’and a dedicated online platform for linking women experts to media), in addition to optimizing traditional communications and media approaches (press releases, media outreach and interviews, op-eds, print and digital reports, social media channels, website, etc.)

 

 

 

 

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Communications and media strategy 

  • Leading the development and implementation of comprehensive media and communications strategies for NWI’s core agendas, in collaboration with the team, including: 
  • Integrated advocacy, campaigning, and fundraising initiatives
  • Effective emergency/crisis response; and
  • Balancing proactive and reactive work. 
  • Coordinating with the Executive Director, staff, and laureates to develop key messages for core advocacy and campaign strategies and co-ordinate their distribution and usage internationally.
  • Managing communications strategies and products—including reports, podcasts, books, film and multi-media products—to increase the visibility of the women laureates, women activists, the movements they support and the initiatives they launch. For example:
  • Implementing effective media strategies to maximize coverage of events, including delegations and Nobel Women’s Initiative conferences;
  • Coordinating the participation of journalists in key advocacy events, including delegations;
  • Overseeing the implementation of all parts of global media outreach and communications strategies, including but not limited to ensuring the effective utilization of social media to optimize opportunities to spotlight and profile the work of feminist peacebuilders and the movements that support them;
  • Organizing media events, including press conferences;
  • Pitching story ideas and op-eds;
  • Writing/editing key press materials, including pitch letters, news releases, backgrounders, fact sheets, bios, op-eds and letters to the editor; and
  • Collaborating on measurement and evaluations of programs and strategies.

 

Management of communications projects, team, and consultants

  • Managing projects and increasing the presence of women as experts in conflict, peace and security in the global media through targeted pitching and the development of strategies and tools, including InterviewHer.
  • Mentoring several positions.
  • Identifying and hiring outside consultants and short-term contractors.
  • Monitoring, performance evaluation and reporting. 

 

Acting as Editor-in-chief 

·      Serve as the Editor-in-chief for the organization, taking the lead to ensure consistent organizational messaging and quality on a range of organizational communications products, including reports, promotional materials, op-eds, films and video products, and on social media platforms.

·      Serve as a spokesperson for the organization when needed.

 

Maintaining and fostering networks and partnerships

·      Building and maintaining relationships with journalists, editors, international media outlets and channels (print, broadcast, digital)—keeping them up to date on what NWI is involved in, and planning. 

 

ABOUT YOU:

We are looking for a dynamic communications professional who is ready to work closely and collaboratively with a small team; someone who is resourceful, experienced and takes initiative. 

 

We seek someone who shares our values, and commitment to the vision—someone with a passion for women’s rights, peace, equality and justice and a belief that organizations and individuals can change the world. 

 

The successful candidate will have a combination of:

  • Experience and networks in media and journalism, strategic perspective, and ability to design and implement workplans.
  • Excellent skills in analysis, communications, and data. An active listener who communicates clearly, respectfully and effectively.
  • Minimum 7 years of relevant work experience with prior experience in communications and media, journalism, and NGOs. Experience in international advocacy and/or campaigning organizations an asset.
  • Knowledge of, and experience with, advocacy, women, peace and security issues, and feminist peacebuilding.
  • Fluency in English. Other languages skills are preferred (especially Arabic, Spanish, or French).

 

Compensation: Commensurate with experience, including a competitive benefits package.

Contract: Permanent, full-time (5 days per week)

Location: Global. Remote
