IHP seeks Visiting Faculty members to join an interdisciplinary team of faculty and host country coordinators for the following programs in Fall 2022 and Spring 2023.

Applicants may apply for one or both semesters. Each four-month term will take approximately 20-30 students from leading U.S. colleges and universities to four program locations to do inter-disciplinary study from a global comparative perspective. The tentative itineraries are as follows:

 IHP’s Cities in the 21^st Century: People, Planning and Politics program in Fall 2022 and Spring 2023

 IHP’s Human Rights: Movements, Power, and Resistance program for Fall 2022 and Spring of 2023

 IHP’s Food Systems: Agriculture, Sustainability, and Justice program in Fall 2022 and Spring of 2023.

IHP’s Climate Change: The Politics of Land, Water and Energy Justice program in Fall 2022 and Spring of 2023.

IHP’s Health and Community: Globalization, Culture, and Care in Spring 2023

Responsibilities

We are seeking a visiting faculty member who will:

• Facilitate learning and teach two courses, please see specific courses on each program page by clinking on the links above or by visiting our job board at: https://tinyurl.com/2p8d7p6w   
• Facilitate student learning through processing of non-lecture program components and providing timely feedback on assignments. Regular participation in all country program activities including guest speakers, site visits and other non-lecture components is expected.
• Work with the Dean of Faculty, Program Director, and Country Coordinators, to ensure that any academic, administrative and student problems associated with the program are resolved.
• Take appropriate measures to protect the health and safety of students in partnership with SIT Student Affairs and local staff.
• Faculty are responsible for ensuring that all students traveling on the official group flight are checked-in and through immigration.
• Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

The ideal candidates should have:

• A Ph.D. in related fields such as anthropology, sociology, geography, or political science, Geography, History, Cultural/Ethnic Studies, Law, Development Economics, Sustainable Development, International Affairs/Public Policy, Political Science, Human Geography, or Food Systems Planning, or a specific focus on Food Insecurity or Food Systems Studies, medical anthropology, cultural anthropology, sociology, and/or public health/policy. For some programs, an M.A. with several years of experience working in relevant fields with experience living and working abroad.

• Expertise in at least one of the topic areas listed above and general knowledge of history and social theory.
• Experience teaching at the college level and a strong commitment to experiential learning, including non-didactic methods that promote critical thinking and field-based research, discussion, and self-reflection.
• Research and practical experience related to urban development outside the U.S. and Europe, preferably in one of the countries in the program (preferred).
• Ability to adapt to the physical and emotional demands of the program. Personal qualities—patience, adaptability, collegiality, cross-cultural competence, and organization—needed to build an intensive, team-oriented study abroad program that covers three countries in four months.
• The ability and desire to support and communicate with students throughout the study abroad experience both in and outside of the classroom.

 For the Fall 2022 semester, employment will begin in July of 2022. For the Spring 2023 semester, faculty will join Fall faculty for online training in July, then be hired for the spring semester.

Traveling with college-aged students for four months and guiding their learning and field research in cities and rural environments, as well as conducting classroom discussions and small-group seminars, presents unique challenges, and demands particular qualities of faculty members. Please consider this point carefully in your letter of interest, paying special attention to how you would handle the conceptual, pedagogical, intercultural, and interpersonal demands of a program like IHP. What in your academic background and work experience has prepared you to step into this role? What specifically interests you about this visiting faculty opportunity as opposed to a more traditional academic position?

 Vaccination is required for all employees in our US offices except for those receiving medical or religious exemptions. If boosters are subsequently recommended by the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) then employees and faculty will be required to receive the booster within thirty (30) days of their eligibility to access the boosters.
