The Communications Manager serves the Institute for Global Health Sciences and the Dept. of Epidemiology and Biostatistics leadership teams, developing, implementing or executing a comprehensive, multidisciplinary communications program and working in two or more communications disciplines in the area of population sciences.

The Communications Manager will partner/collaborate with the UCSF Office of Communications, which leads media relations, digital communications for the UCSF website and social media channels, and brand communications for the UCSF enterprise as required and ensure that all mentions of UCSF must comply with media relations and University of California policies.

This position manages a comprehensive communications program and / or projects for a small unit with routine and / or non-complex communication requirements. Reviews and approves recommendations for functional programs. Provides guidance to subordinates to achieve goals in accordance with established policies.

This position requires strategic communications planning skills, strong writing and organization skills, to represent the public face of global health and population sciences across UCSF, the University of California system and beyond. The Manager is responsible for developing communications and multi-media (e.g., video) content for, or supervising technical staff in activities associated with, marketing, outreach, and internal and external communications. This includes developing publications, electronic communications, websites, social media and marketing materials that align with UCSF’s brand identity and digital standards.


Note: Flexible Work Schedule, Remote/Onsite, days to be arranged in conjunction with manager.



Required Qualifications :

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Prior managerial/supervisory experience.
  • 6 or more years experience/training in organizational communications, community relations, news media and public relations functions ; and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • At least 5 years of experience in professional communications environment, with preferably three years of communications in an academic or research environment.
  • Experience with use of social media including Facebook and Twitter.
  • Strong knowledge of all aspects of communications, including strategic planning for various media venues, technical aspects and requirements of various venues, and the most appropriate and effective applications.
  • Broad knowledge and understanding of technical applications to effectively manage /supervise professional technical staff, including design concepts, various media and mediums, applications, etc.
  • Solid skills to create, develop and implement comprehensive long and short term strategic communications plans.
  • Solid knowledge and skills to advise and consult with management to ensure delivery of the desired message to the target and / or broad general audiences.
  • Solid written, verbal, interpersonal communications, active listening and political acumen skills.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, project management and problem recognition, avoidance and resolution skills.
  • Strong skills to ensure production of high quality work within budget and time constraints.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel)
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Proven ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects and timelines
