TEAM SUMMARY

 The Development Team at Color Of Change drives resource development through innovative and strategic approaches to individual giving and institutional partnerships. We ensure there are sufficient resources for our teams to achieve their goals and for COC to remain a powerful influencer across broad segments of the progressive movement. We are creative and passionate professionals committed to excellence in the pursuit of COC’s mission. The Development Team is instrumental in ensuring that the financial support we generate aligns with COC’s mission, vision, and values, and also enables us to continue investing in Black leadership, infrastructure, capacity building, and political power. We are a collaborative team committed to learning and growing together as we navigate the complex landscape of philanthropy and fundraising in service of our mission. 

 ROLE SUMMARY 

Color Of Change seeks a full-time Associate Grant Writer - Institutional Partnerships to join our growing Development Team. This position is ideal for strong writers and communicators with a keen understanding of social and racial justice concepts, who endeavor to translate their passion into compelling narratives to advance COC’s mission through partnerships with institutions and foundations. 

Working closely with the Senior Writers and the team, the Associate Grant Writer will provide critical support for the writing needs of the team, which include identifying potential alignment between grantor funding priorities and COC’s mission as well as drafting grant applications, proposals, and timely reports to funding sources on grants received. This role will also share team responsibilities related to the day-to-day management of Development processes, systems, and workflow. As a vital member of the team, the Associate Grant Writer will exercise their strengths and build on their areas of professional growth as part of a collaborative team working to cultivate and maintain the resources to sustain and grow our critical work. 

Color Of Change’s Institutional Partnerships Team (IPT) is part of COC’s Development Team, which solicits and stewards relationships with institutions across our 501(c)3, 501(c)4, and PAC entities. Color Of Change does not accept corporate funding or donations. The Associate Grant Writer position will support IPT activities that solicit and steward relationships across COC’s 501(c)3 and 501(c)4 entities. 

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Leveraging data and insights from Color Of Change teams, projects, and campaigns, the Associate Grant Writer will be responsible for:

Researching and identifying potential grant opportunities: 

  • Perform prospect research on institutions and foundations and support activities to identify potential fits between grantor funding priorities and COC objectives;
  • Regularly inform relevant stakeholders of potential grant opportunities, mission alignment, and eligibility requirements;
  • Craft case statements and other materials that identify strategic areas for COC program growth and use compelling narratives to fuel interest and investment in COC priorities and campaigns.

Assisting Senior Writers and other members of the team with workflow management and coordination:

  • Prepare materials for grant-related processes and meetings, coordinating closely with other members of the Development team and across COC teams
  • Ensure that standard elements of funder submissions such as staff biographies, required forms, and other information is accurate, readily updated, filed, and made available as needed;
  • Develop and execute work plans and timelines for proposal and report submissions, coordinating closely with Senior Writers on needs related to quality assurance, internal and external communications, and final submission.

Drafting, editing, and reviewing grant applications and proposals:

  • Collaborate with COC teams to gather updates on their work and prepare timely reports for institutional partners in accordance with agreed-upon requirements
  • Draft concept papers, proposals, and reports by synthesizing campaign and organizational goals, needs, activities, successes, and challenges into compelling narratives that represent COC’s work.

Assist Senior Writers and other members of the team to manage internal and external communications and relationships:

  • Participate and/or lead in meeting facilitation and notetaking
  • Engage in strategic internal and external outreach related to new and existing institutional and foundation relationships;
  • Facilitate grantor understanding of Color Of Change by supporting the organization’s interactions with the appropriate COC staff, board members, and funders, which may include sharing information about COC with grantors, arranging and conducting video/conference calls, and site visits;
  • Communicating with institutional funders as needed to advance grant proposal, reporting, and renewal processes.

Any other duties as assigned to help advance COC’s fundraising strategy and organizational infrastructure.

QUALIFICATIONS

Mission Alignment: At Color Of Change and this role, strategic thinking, communication, and writing ability are paramount. While prior experience with development or a similar role in the civil rights sector is not required, a commitment to civil rights and racial justice is. 

Competitive applicants possess a deep passion for the mission and a keen understanding of the intersection of race with media and culture, economic, gender, climate, technology, and criminal justice issues. They are committed to Black leadership and infrastructure and endeavor to contribute their racial justice lens and critical writing skills to serving COC’s mission.

Ideal candidates for the Associate Grant Writer position may also have:

  • 1-3 years (or more) of professional/progressive work experience in proposal or program development, particularly in role(s) that require a variety of writing styles and/or a variety of audiences;
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail;
  • Ability to quickly map out projects and plans, including timelines, performance indicators, and ownership of responsibilities;
  • A proactive approach for identifying opportunities for improvement, as well as removing barriers to implementation;
  • Experience in role(s) that require the handling of competing priorities and achieving results in a fast-paced environment;
  • Experience working with digital communication tools and workflow platforms, e.g. Google, Slack, monday.com, zoom, etc.
  • A strong work ethic that successfully balances individual and shared team/organizational priorities, sharing in collective goals, successes, and challenges;
  • Exposure to synthesizing research and drawing insights from data in order to craft compelling narratives and/or materials in service of racial and social justice issues;
  • Experience crafting concept papers, proposals, reports, and/or stewardship materials for progressive institutions that have secured significant funding;
  • Other types of experience generating funding for racial and social equity movements.

COMPENSATION

The Salary for the Associate Grant Writer is $73,00. This is a full-time exempt position. Color Of Change also offers a competitive benefits package.
