Job Description

The Programs and Communications Manager is a key member of the LBI’s Public History Team, which plans and implements programs designed to educate and engage broad audiences about the history and culture of German-speaking Jews, especially as documented in the collections of the LBI. The Programs and Communications Manager is primarily responsible for producing and marketing public events and communications aimed at donors, constituents, and the broader public, but they will also support the Public History Team in conceptualizing individual programs and broader initiatives, which currently include the following:

  • Exhibitions and public events (lectures, panel discussions, screenings, or performances)
  • Print and digital publications (LBI News, bi-weekly newsletters, Leo Baeck Memorial Lecture, pamphlets)
  • Social media, and other digital content such as LBI’s award-winning podcast, Exile, narrated by Mandy Patinkin
  • Educator workshops and curriculum development
  • Major curatorial projects (e.g., 1938Projekt, Shared History Project)

The Programs and Communications Manager reports directly to the Director of Public History but will work closely with staff from across the Institute. They will also work closely with the facilities and events staff of the Center for Jewish History (CJH), which provides critical support for in-person events.

Key Responsibilities

  • Produce multiple in-person and online events per month. including but not limited to: Researching and communicating with potential speakers; drafting promotional copy; coordinating event logistics with the facilities team of the CJH; administering ticketing/registration; technical moderation of livestreams; supervising catering; creating program brochures
  • Marketing of live events including paid advertising, promotional partnerships, social media, and earned media
  • Manage and edit communications on multiple platforms including the LBI Website, electronic newsletters, and a bi-annual print newsletter
  • Support the ad-hoc social media
  • team to promote all public history and content created directly for social media channels
  • Participate in regular Public History meetings and contribute to conceptualize new programs and initiatives
  • Administrative tasks such as submitting relevant invoices, copyediting and proofreading, and managing the programs and communications calendar
  • Based on interest and ability, the Programs and Communications Manager may also support the Public History team with research for exhibitions, podcasts, and other curatorial projects


Key Responsibilities

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in History, Jewish Studies, German, Journalism, Museum Studies, or a related field plus 1-2 years relevant experience
  • Knowledge of German language strongly preferred
  • Excellent research, writing, editing, and proofreading skills (in English)

Additional desired skills and expertise

Desktop publishing (especially InDesign), basic photo, audio, and video editing, content management for social media and websites, grant writing and reporting, Raiser’s Edge/Financial Edge or similar non-profit CRMs.

Hours: This is a full-time position Monday through Friday and requires a minimum of 2 days in-person. Must be available for ad-hoc event support.

Salary & Benefits: $50-$55K, annually, competitive benefits package.
