POSITION SUMMARY:


This is an Associate Director position in the Carl G. Grefenstette Center for Ethics in Science, Technology, and Law at Duquesne University. This position will report to the Executive Director (ED). This is a full time, 2-year position that is funded by a newly received grant from the Hillman Foundation. This is a hybrid position, with occasional travel to Duquesne required.


The Associate Director will work closely with the ED in the main purposes of the center, which involve grant writing, teaching, event coordination, and conducting research. The Associate Director will teach between one and two classes each semester related to digital ethics and/or policy. They will work with the ED to seek after and apply for federal and private grants. They will also assist the ED in organizing the annual Fall Tech Ethics Symposium, the Spring Hacking4Humanity, and regular lectures and public discussions. Finally, the AD will be expected to continue in their own research related to AI ethics, tech ethics more generally, tech policy, social studies of technology, studies of technology and society, the intersection of humanities with science and technology, or a related field.


The Grefenstette Center relies upon teamwork, problem solving, and bringing to life a vision of the center that does not currently exist. This position requires someone who is willing to construct something new and work closely with the other team members to make this happen. This is a grant-funded, 2 year position with the possibility of renewal that is dependent upon the reception of future grants.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


Teaches between one and two courses each semester for undergraduate or graduate students on AI ethics, data ethics, tech policy, or a related field.


Assists in seeking out grants and writing grant applications for federal organizations and private foundations.


Assists in organizing and coordinating events, lectures, and public discussions on campus.

Continues their own research related to technology ethics, policy, or a related field.


Travel to Duquesne University required 5 % of time, may live either in Pittsburgh region or elsewhere.


Completes other duties as assigned.


REQUIREMENTS:


Minimum qualifications:


Doctoral degree from an accredited institution and 1-3 years of experience. A Juris Doctor degree may also be accepted if enough of a research background is demonstrated.


The candidate has applied for grants in the past.


The candidate has a demonstrated track record of university teaching with classes related to technology ethics or policy, or the intersection of religious thought, technology, and science.


The candidate has the capability and desire to host compelling public events.


The candidate has promising research related to technology ethics, tech studies, or tech policy.

Current valid driver’s license.


Preferred qualifications:


Doctoral degree in Science and Technology Studies, Computer Science Ethics, Theological Studies or Religious Studies preferred.


The candidate has successfully received federal and private grants in the past, especially those related to intersections of technology, science, and ethics.


The candidate has an excellent teaching record of undergraduate or graduate teaching on topics related to tech ethics, tech policy, or the relationship between technology and religion.


The candidate has a demonstrated record of hosting and organizing compelling public events.


The candidate has a proven track record of first-rate research in technology ethics, technology studies, technology policy, or the relationship between religion and technology.


Alternately, the successful candidate may possess any equivalent combination of experience and training, which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the essential job functions. This includes, but is not limited to, the following:
