Tideline Program Contract Educator Job Description

Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, Inc., is a non-profit membership organization working through

environmental education and activism for a cleaner Hudson and greater awareness of its natural,

recreational, historic, and scenic resources.

Like all members of Clearwater's staff, the contract educator is expected to project the

organization's philosophy of care and concern for the environment when interacting with the public

and Clearwater volunteers.

The Tideline program is a multi-disciplinary program that explores all the different aspects

of our estuary. The goal of the program is to connect students with their local environment, to

challenge them to understand how our daily lives affect the estuary, and to teach them how to

become an active citizen to protect the environment. The program consists of hands-on learning

stations that include going fishing with a seine net, examining and identifying the fish we catch, an

aquatic macroinvertebrates station, navigation, water quality testing, and art projects. Our programs also include music as an element.


Contract Educators will be paid an hourly wage of $14-$17 depending on experience. Staff

usually arrives around 9AM to set up for students and is finished by 3PM, if not earlier.


RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

▪ Setting up station components (tanks, nets, waders, station materials)

▪ Delivering program (learning stations, music, crowd control)

▪ Routine clean-up after program (putting away gear, cleaning of area)

▪ Equipment maintenance or other duties to sustain program

▪ Taking part in staff training

▪ Transportation to and from program (programs take place at multiple locations on the river)


PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

▪ Important personal qualities that will aid in meeting the challenges of the position

include a high degree of self-motivation and ability to work independently, tempered

by cooperative spirit and the ability to take direction from Tideline program director;

flexibility; tact; patience; and organizational ability.

▪ Competent knowledge of freshwater and estuarine ecology and natural history, plus

related environmental issues.

▪ Ability to present educational programs and/or workshops;

▪ Excellent oral communications skills;

▪ Must be able to lift and move 50lbs

▪ Prior experience in education, or working with children

▪ Musical skills are a plus

▪ Willing to submit to background check

As a contract educator, hours will be part-time and the schedule will depend on student numbers,

time of year, and program demand. Therefore, flexibility is key. Our busiest time of year is AprilJune, and mid-September to late October (virtually every weekday for those months).
