Summary

The Association of Public and Land-grant Universities’ (APLU’s) Office of Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources (FANR) and the Board on Human Sciences (BoHS) seeks an Executive Director, BoHS and Director, FANR to provide strategic direction and leadership to BoHS as well as lead key initiatives within the FANR Office. Successful candidates will carry out the goals of BoHS by providing national leadership and strategic oversight. This includes leading the development and implementation of the Board’s priorities, supporting membership in executive and liaison roles, and developing and coordinating a communication and advocacy strategy to advance APLU’s policy positions in human sciences. Further, as Director, FANR, the incumbent will act as lead staff for the Board on Oceans, Atmosphere, and Climate (BOAC) and the Board on Veterinary Medicine (BVM). The incumbent will also provide support to the Board on Agriculture Assembly (BAA) and the FANR Office as needed. This full-time position is based in Washington, DC. Employees are working remotely from locations within DC, MD, VA through April 1, 2022 due to COVID-19. Employees of APLU must reside in DC, MD, or VA.

Background to the Board on Human Sciences (BOHS)

The Board on Human Sciences (BoHS) is an association of institutional members of higher education units responsible for research/discovery, extension/outreach, and teaching/learning programs in the Human Sciences at universities across North America. Their members are committed to a national agenda that unifies disciplines within and beyond the Human Sciences to enrich people’s lives. The BoHS is one of several constituent Boards associated with the Commission on Food, Environment, and Renewable Resources (CFERR) of the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities. The BoHS is governed by its Board of Directors as well as its Rules of Operations, Strategic Plan and Action Plan. More information on the BoHS can be found here.

 

Supervision

The Executive Director, BoHS, is directly supervised by APLU’s Vice President for FANR and is responsible to the BoHS Chair for guidance on engagement and duties. Performance reviews are accomplished in partnership between APLU’s Vice President for Food, Agriculture, and Natural Resources and the BoHS Chair with input from the Executive Committee.

 

Responsibilities

Executive Director, BoHS

·       Responsible for the successful implementation of the BoHS goals and objectives by providing proactive leadership, supporting board development, ensuring positive public relations, exercising responsible financial management, acting as a liaison with stakeholders, complying with legal and ethical standards, and promoting organizational development.

·       Lead the development and implementation of BoHS Strategic Framework to provide national leadership in Human Sciences. Ensure the primary goals and objectives of the framework are incorporated into ongoing priority areas and advocacy messaging.

·       Promotes BoHS (and APLU’s) commitment to advancing a climate of diversity, equity and inclusion that aligns with the mission of bringing together multiple perspectives to address human needs.

·       Working closely with the Executive Committee, provide leadership and oversight to the BoHS/APLU Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and annually review and update the BoHS Scope of Work.

·       Prepare agendas and associated background materials, including reports, for BoHS Executive Committee Director meetings.

·       Oversee BoHS events, including working with the BoHS Executive Committee to develop agendas for events and manage speakers as well as oversee event logistics (in-person, virtual, and hybrid).

·       Maintain an active list of BoHS liaisons (primary and secondary) to other APLU Councils, Commissions and other initiatives and support them in their work.

·       Serve as an Ex Officio member to identified organizations and committees, including ad hoc committees appointed by the BoHS chair.

·       Promote, encourage, and support BoHS member engagement in APLU activities, Councils and/or Commissions.

·       Engage with partner organizations and coalitions by regularly participating in external meetings and identifying opportunities for collaboration and shared advocacy on issues related to the disciplines of human sciences.


Director, FANR

·       Provide coordination, facilitation, and support to the Commission on Food, Environment, & Renewable Resources (CFERR); Board on Oceans, Atmosphere and Climate (BOAC); and Colleges of Veterinary Medicine (CVM), including advising them of upcoming meetings, providing background materials, and coordinating advocacy and communications issues that may arise with appropriate APLU offices. Contribute as a team member in the Office of Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources.

·       Work directly with CFERR leadership, BAA standing committees, and the APLU Council on Government Affairs to coordinate a communication and advocacy strategy to advance APLU’s policy positions in human sciences.

·       Support advocacy efforts for increased federal funding on appropriations priorities, Farm Bill (nutrition and other human sciences related lines of funding) and other authorization legislation priorities, as well as other relevant opportunities with federal agencies.

·       Assist with planning and implementing joint meetings with the Council for Administrators of Family and Consumer Sciences (CAFCS).

·       Collaborate with APLU colleagues to address issues of national prominence important to BoHS and promote the work of APLU.

·       Promote a supportive diverse, inclusive, and effective team environment, supervising staff, and providing coaching, support, training, and development opportunities as needed.

·       Perform other duties as assigned, including assignments and responsibilities within APLU and FANR.

 

Preferred Qualifications

·       Bachelor’s Degree required. Master’s Degree or Ph.D. in human sciences, organizational leadership, or other relevant disciplines a plus.

·       At least eight years of progressively responsible experience. preferably in areas related to human sciences or higher education (primary focus areas include: family and consumer sciences; food science and nutrition; health management and wellness; culinary arts, hospitality, and tourism; housing and interior design; human development and family relations; personal and family finance; and textiles, apparel, and retailing). Experience providing executive director, or executive level leadership to boards and committees.

·       Ability to cultivate and maintain relationships with federal agencies and national organizations, university stakeholder groups, and other relevant partners. Ability to interface with high-level university and policy leaders.

·       Excellent organizational and program management skills with the ability to manage a budget and achieve set objectives.

·       Excellent written and oral communication skills; exceptional presentation skills.

·       Experience planning meetings and events, including agenda development, logistical oversight and budget management. Excellent session design and facilitation skills.

·       Strong management skills, with successful experiencing building and maintaining supportive, diverse, inclusive work environments.

·       Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to provide strategic direction and leadership to multiple constituencies and to work collaboratively with diverse groups of people.

·       Detail-oriented; able to juggle multiple responsibilities simultaneously.

·       Strong commitment to advancing higher education initiatives.

·       Ability to travel domestically, as needed.
