ABOUT HEALTHY LEARNERS

Healthy Learners is an award-winning non-profit organization committed to improving the health of children in Zambia and beyond. We partner directly with the government and local communities so that schoolchildren can stay healthy, learn effectively and have a brighter future. Healthy Learners was the inaugural winner of the 2021 Duke F.M. Kirby Prize for Scaling Social Impact and the UBS Optimus Foundation COVID-19 Relief Prize and has seen strong, steady growth in philanthropic support over time.

School-aged children in low-resource settings suffer from a high burden of disease and often lack access to basic healthcare, which causes otherwise preventable and curable illnesses to frequently result in life-long health challenges or disabilities. In the short term, these illnesses contribute to school absenteeism, poor academic performance, and high dropout rates. In the long term, they undermine physical, cognitive, and emotional development and hinder economic prosperity.

Healthy Learners is bridging this gap in Zambia through our unique model of school-based community health. By training teachers to be community health workers and making schools entry points into the public healthcare system, children now receive medical attention in substantially greater numbers, improving health outcomes and reducing absenteeism. We currently serve more than 840,000 students and are working with the Zambian government to scale the program nationally to serve 1.5 million children by 2026.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Healthy Learners is built on a solid foundation of philanthropic partnerships, a highly capable team, and a robust culture. As we enter an exciting period of growth, we are looking for an experienced and passionate Grant Writer to help drive fundraising as we scale in Zambia and beyond.

The successful candidate will play a critical role on the development team in a rapidly growing organization. S/he  will work closely with the VP of Development and Communications to ensure annual revenue targets of $8-$11 million annually in renewal and new funding over the next three years.

The Senior Grant Writer will work with the VP of Development and Communications to secure a sustainable financial future for Healthy Learners. S/he will help lead the development of grant proposals, renewals, and reports, and should be an exceptional writer.

The candidate should be excited to join a fast-paced, rapidly growing, and mission-driven organization.

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Job Responsibilities

The Grant Writer is responsible for managing the following responsibilities;

Grant Writing and Grant Management  (70%)

  • Proposal Development: Write, edit, and submit grant proposals, and applications to foundations, government agencies, and other grant-making entities. Develop high-quality, innovative, and responsive proposals, concept papers, and applications for new  programs and for the extension of current projects. Grant writing will be primarily to private foundations; however, some individual or government applications may be required.
  • Grant Reporting: Monitor and ensure compliance with grant reporting requirements, providing timely and accurate reports to funders.
  • Renewal Management: Oversee the renewal processes with existing donors; lead the development of donor reports and ensure compliance with all donor requirements.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with program managers and other team members to gather information necessary for grant proposals. For larger proposals and reports, project manage the input of several stakeholders to develop a successful submission, including by convening meetings, developing clear instructions for each stakeholder’s role, and ensuring expectations and timeframes are met.
  • Research: Carry out research and engage other departments across the organization to collect and synthesize data for proposals and reports.  Maintain up-to-date knowledge of Healthy Learners programs, initiatives, and strategy; engage with staff across Healthy Learners’ teams and offices to better learn the program and to gather critical information in non-burdensome ways to enhance proposals and reports.
  • Budget Analysis: Develop and review project budgets and work with the Finance Team to ensure they align with the grant requirements.
  • Policy Adherence: Act as an organizational focal point for grants/grant management—advising on internal and donor policies, ensuring compliance with requisite regulations/policies, and identifying opportunities for growth and process improvements.
  • Standard Reporting: Work with other members of the Development Team and staff to write compelling content for our annual report, quarterly reports, and other communication materials that seek to amplify Healthy Learners’ brand visibility and effectively articulate our mission, vision and strategy.

Donor Identification (20%)

  • Research and Identification: Identify potential grant opportunities aligned with the organization's mission and programs.
  • Opportunity Development: Help to identify and frame growth opportunities, matching program needs with the interests of potential donors.
  • Research and Stay Informed: Stay current on trends in philanthropy, nonprofit funding, and grant writing best practices.

Donor Stewardship  (10%)

  • Donor Stewardship: Work with the VP of Development and Communications and CEO to ensure individualized stewardship plans are developed and implemented for all foundation donors.
  • Ensure timely and effective follow-up on all requests and correspondences with current and prospective donors.
  • Promote the organization’s mission, values, strategy, brand, and short- and long-term objectives,  externally and internally.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • The ideal candidate is an excellent strategic thinker, has impeccable follow-through, and is deeply passionate about the mission and vision of Healthy Learners. S/he is an exceptionally clear, precise, and confident communicator, with excellent verbal and written skills. The candidate is excited to join a developing department in a rapidly growing organization. S/he approaches that opportunity with humility, hunger,  and a “no job too small” commitment to meeting the needs of the organization. In addition, the ideal candidate:
  • Has at least five (5) years of relevant experience with increasing levels of responsibility.
  • Has a proven successful track record in securing funding from private foundations.
  •  Is passionate about Healthy Learners’ mission, vision, and values.
  • Has excellent analytical skills.
  • Has excellent written communication skills and can communicate passionately and effectively in writing with stakeholders about Healthy Learners’ story and impact.
  •  Is highly comfortable working in a dynamic, entrepreneurial environment that demands and rewards innovation and creativity, with a high bar for commitment and performance.
  • Has proven experience and ability in managing staff and collaborating with colleagues across countries and time zones.
  • Can manage diverse relationships, be culturally sensitive, and demonstrate sound judgment required for working with various stakeholders.
  • Has excellent attention to detail.
  • Brings knowledge and interest in international development and global health issues.
  • Is conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines, and communicating both internally and externally in a timely and responsive manner.
  • The successful Senior Grant Writer will also be expected to embrace and role model the core values of Healthy Learners:
  • We are HUMBLE
  • We are HUNGRY
  • We are SMART

As part of a rapidly growing NGO, this role has the potential for advancement.
