College Admissions Specialist (Part-Time 2022-2023)

As a College Admissions Specialist, you will guide the success of BTNY high school students by supporting them through their college application process and preparing them to apply to a competitive four-year college.

This part-time role is designed for current or former college admissions professionals.


Responsibilities:

  • Teaching college access workshops during six "Super Saturdays" per year for a group of 10 - 12 students.
  • Support the BTNY team in ensuring that your students meet organizational expectations, including:
  1. 85% or above in each academic class
  2. Participation in at least two extracurricular activities
  3. Engagement in all six Super Saturdays
  4. Apply to at least 12 best fit colleges
  5. Submit all financial aid applications
  6. Apply to at least 5 scholarships
  • Conducting college application check-ins by phone or video chat with a core group of 10 -12 students, and reporting the information gathered during those meetings within 72 hours.
  • Completing 15+ hours of training and at least four hours of professional development during the year
  • Receiving feedback constructively in order to improve performance
  • Tracking and reporting student data
  • Other duties based on the grade level you are assigned


Mentor Calendar:

  • Weeks of July 11 and August 8th: College Application Bootcamp (flexible hours)
  • September 9-11: CASP Training (Friday evening, full day Saturday and Sunday)
  • September 18 : School Curriculum Day
  • Professional Development Workshops : 2 per year, 2 hours each
  • Super Saturday Dates (8AM-2PM):
  1. September 25
  2. November 6
  3. December 18
  4. February 5
  5. March 19 
  6. May 14 
  • Between Super Saturdays:
  1. Remotely check in with each of your assigned cohort of students
  2. Review your lesson plan for the upcoming Super Saturday
  3. Check-in Meeting with assigned High School staff member
  4. Attend Professional Development Meeting with all mentors and BTNY full-time high school staff


Anticipated Time Commitment:

This role requires approximately 140-170 hours throughout the academic year, including:

  • 15 hours of training – August/ September
  • 36 hours of Saturday Programming – 6 Saturdays throughout the academic year, 8am-2pm
  • 65 hours of student monthly check-ins – 30 minute check-ins with select students within your cohort following each of the 6 Saturday programs, plus an hour to report data gathered from each monthly check-in.
  • 20 hours of pre-Saturday lesson planning – About 2 hours of lesson planning per Saturday program
  • 10 hours of professional development support – 1 hour meeting with assigned High School team member between each Saturday program, plus two two-hour sessions chosen by the HSM
  • 2 hours to attend Curriculum Day

We're Looking for Someone Who:

  • Has obtained a bachelor’s degree from an accredited 4-year university
  • Is familiar with the college admissions process including the application process through Common Application, Coalition Application, as well as the application process for SUNY and CUNY schools
  • Familiar with the FAFSA and NYS Aid Application as well as the process of completing a CSS Profile
  • Is passionate about forming mentorship relationships with students
  • Understands that supporting students means gathering and reporting information in a timely fashion
  • Will respond to email, phone calls, and texts from students and staff within 24 hours
  • Can commit to the entire 2022-23 academic year (July 2022 - May 2023)
  • Is confident with MS Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint in particular), Google Suite, Zoom, and comfortable learning new systems

Covid-19 Vaccination

Breakthrough New York requires all employees and ongoing-volunteers with in-person role responsibilities to be “up to date” with their COVID-19 vaccinations prior to the start of their in-person role. “Up to date” entails receiving a full vaccine course and at least one booster shot if eligible. Specific deadlines and details will be communicated directly to candidates during the interview process. Candidates in need of an exemption from this policy due to a medical reason or because of a sincerely held religious belief must submit a request for accommodation as soon as possible after an offer has been made.
