    Position Overview

The Dream Unfinished Orchestra (TDU), an activist orchestra that merges classical music, social justice, and civic engagement, is seeking a passionate, committed individual to join our team as Managing Director.

Since 2015, TDU has used the power of music to amplify voices and create dialogue around racial and social justice and other pressing societal challenges, producing performances centered around themes such as police brutality, environmental justice, immigration, and Black disability justice. Featuring people of color in the orchestra, in the music, and behind the scenes, this is an orchestra that truly looks and sounds like New York City. Learn more at www.thedreamunfinished.org.

This part-time, hybrid position supports the Executive & Artistic Director in making programmatic decisions and advancing TDU’s mission through operational coordination, season planning, communications, and event production. It offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to a growing nonprofit operating at a unique intersection of activism and the arts.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Act as a liaison between TDU and outside presenters, partner organizations, and guest artists
    • Work closely with TDU leadership, board members, staff, and volunteers, facilitating regular check-in meetings
    • Manage organizational operations and internal communications through project management software and applications such as Slack and Monday.com
    • Co-facilitate board meetings, including drafting agendas and supporting materials
    • Contract artistic and technical personnel in consultation with the Executive & Artistic Director
    • Oversee production needs with presenters, guest artists, and venue staff
    • Supervise TDU engagements on-site, managing volunteers, staff, artists, and technical personnel
    • Lead the drafting and submission of grant proposals and related materials; attend strategy meetings and webinars hosted by funding organizations
    • Support efforts to increase audience engagement and individual fundraising

This position is a good fit for someone with:

    • A deep commitment to social justice, the arts, and community engagement
    • Minimum 1-2 years of professional experience in nonprofit administration, event production, community organizing, or as an arts educator/performer
    • Familiarity with grant writing, reporting, and/or fundraising processes
    • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
    • The ability to work efficiently and independently with a small, mission-driven team
    • A highly organized, detail-oriented, and proactive approach when managing multiple projects
    • A sense of humor, curiosity, and collaborative spirit to creative and community-centered work
    • The ability to attend events in-person as needed
    • Proficiency in Google Workspace and project management tools (e.g. Monday.com, Slack, Airtable) is a plus
    • Bachelor’s degree in Nonprofit Management, Performing Arts, Arts Administration, Human Rights, Ethnic Studies, Gender Studies, Business, or related field is preferred

TDU encourages applications from a range of professional and artistic backgrounds. Even if you don’t meet every qualification listed, if you’re excited about our mission and interested in growing your skills in arts administration, nonprofit management, or social justice advocacy we’d love to hear from you.

    Terms:

    • Approximately 10-15 hours per week, with additional hours during concerts and events
