We are in search of an experienced senior leader who will partner with our Executive Director (ED), Director of Finance and Operations (DFO) and Case Management Director (CMD) to advance our work and be a strategic thought partner. The successful candidate for the position will be a leader who pulls from relevant life experience as well as professional experience in organizational growth management; evaluation; professional development, and team-building; as well as grants management and oversight. They will have a commitment to and grounding in trans issues and rights, racial and gender equity, and immigration justice.

Key Areas of Focus

Organizational Growth Planning and Capacity Building

El/La is in constant growth and being offered opportunities to partner. The Deputy Director (DD) will:

  • Have a working understanding of our strategic plan, how growth would aligns with it or adverse affects it, and lead on the implementation of our strategic plan; build processes that help us adapt effectively to growth and change and enable us to evaluate program opportunities and requests for realistics pros and cons;
  • Ensure adequate infrastructure and systems are in place to support our growth in size and programming;
  • Assess our current tools, policies, systems, and practices as they relate to administrative and technology strengths and needs; 
  • Plan for evolving staffing needs in collaboration with the CMD and Program Manager;
  • Create a capacity building plan that includes recommendations, resources, and professional development plans for implementing programming; ensure resources are designated to enhance the capacity of our staff to perform their work effectively, efficiently and with care;
  • Play a critical leadership role in our annual organization-wide planning process with strategic planning consultant; 
  • Work collaboratively with an evaluation consultant to create and implement a model performance evaluation aligned with our values;
  • Create and maintain document that clearly delineated roles and responsibilities of all staff; ensure we are integrating program-level work planning into an overall plan; monitor and evaluate our progress in alignment with our strategic plan;
  • Create effective communications practices internally to ensure strong communication lines in cross-team planning and externally collaboration;
  • Provide guidance on the process of transitioning to 501c3 status.

Development and Grants Management

  • Strategize with ED to coordinate and advocate for funding asks from the City of San Francisco during the annual budget season, including attending meetings with organizational partners and City Council Supervisors;
  • Oversee grant portfolio and work with ED to implement fundraising strategy;
  • Work with grant writer and all staff to create grants plans and monitor work to ensure that all grant deliverables are met across private and government funding;
  • Oversee and track overall organizational budget to ensure grant compliance, meet regularly with DFO to have a good understanding of current financials;
  • Partner with DFO to create annual and updated program budgets as needed;
  • Attend all contract, foundation and individual giving meetings and be able to step in for ED when needed;
  • Attend meetings with fiscal sponsor and work with client services representative to meet our fiscal sponsor’s requests and protocols including writing program descriptions and program policies;
  • Hire grant writer to write grants and grant reports and provide direct coaching and supervision.

Senior Leadership

Along with all members of the Executive Team, the DD will step into leadership as needed, and will:

  • Serve as high-level strategic thought partner and advisor to the ED and Board; step-in as needed during the ED’s absence; 
  • Serve as a key member with shared responsibility for achieving the organization's vision and goals; 
  • Inform and advise the team on overall financial and operational health, and growth management and trajectory; 
  • Collectively explore opportunities that strengthen and/or challenge our capacity and resources;
  • Participate in all staff meetings and retreats;
  • Other duties as assigned.
