Full-time: 32 hours per week

Pay Range: $22.84-$27.04/hour (hourly pay equivalent to $38,000-$45,000 annually), pay will be based on experience

The Resources and Education About Community Health (REACH) program was created in response to Detroit residents identifying health concerns in their communities that are also connected to environmental factors. DWEJ created the REACH program with the goal of  reducing environmental health disparities associated with asthma, lead poisoning and cardiovascular disease (CVD) The Community Health Worker is key to achieving this goal by conducting  in-home education with families to help them identify health hazards such as poor indoor/outdoor air quality, asthma triggers, lead hazards, etc. and by providing the resources to address these issues.

Community Health Workers are responsible for the identification of environmental hazards in the natural and built environment and the implementation of interventions that can support individuals and communities to obtain and maintain their health and wellbeing.  

In this role you will responsible for:

  • The use of standardized data collection tools, which may include surveys, finger-prick lead testing, soil sample collection, etc.,  to assess environmental health risks and needs of individuals and communities
  • Discussing environmental health related concerns and prioritizing individual and community level actions with community members
  • Providing basic asthma and lead education as necessary based on screenings.
  • Informing individuals about available health supporting resources and benefits of resources and helping individuals access resources paying special attention to addressing barriers to access. 
  • Working with DWEJ team members to develop educational materials to inform people of environmental hazards and strategies to lessen the impact of hazards on their wellbeing
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of DWEJ’s educational programs and materials
  • Advocating for residents’ needs with social service organizations, healthcare workers/system, industry, regulatory organizations and policymakers. 
  • Representing DWEJ at events to provide organization and program information
  • This list of duties and responsibilities is not all-inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities, as management may deem necessary from time to time

Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong organizational skills and interpersonal skills 
  • Must be detail-oriented and have the ability to prioritize workload
  • Experience working  sensitively and effectively with individuals of diverse educational, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment and programs (i.e., MS Word, Excel, Google workspace, email, etc.)
  • Experience completing data forms, entering data  and maintaining paper and digital 
  • Home visiting experience
  • Must be knowledgeable or willing to learn about community resources 
  • Must be comfortable with community outreach; two (2) years of community-based experience preferred.
  • Community Health Worker certification preferred.
  • Spanish bilingual preferred

Special Requirements

  • Reliable transportation
  • Must pass criminal background check

Work Environment

Office setting:

  • Climate controlled, office environment with little discomfort 
  • Bending, standing lifting associated with routine use of standard office equipment such as computers, photocopiers, and filing cabinets

Fieldwork:

  • Driving, walking, standing for long periods of time, bending, twisting, climbing stairs
  • Environments are unpredictable. May be distractions/discomfort due to temperature, noise, etc.
