The Institute for Justice and Opportunity (the Institute) seeks a full-time Career Pathways Program Coordinator to provide programmatic support for the Navigator Certificate in Human Services & Community Justice training program. 

The goal of this program is to prepare people with lived experience in the criminal legal system for employment and advancement in the field of human services.  The course offers participants an opportunity to develop human service career pathways toward meaningful employment options with increasing responsibility and salary.  In addition, the Navigator program is an on-ramp to higher education, granting academic credit to those that enroll in select colleges after completion.

As a champion of institutional, structural, and personal transformation, the John Jay College Institute for Justice and Opportunity (The Institute) opens doors and eliminates barriers to success for people who have been involved in the criminal legal system. The Institute is one of twelve research entities that collectively comprise the Research Consortium of the John Jay College of Criminal Justice. The Institute has a diverse portfolio of projects that focus on identifying what it takes for people to live successfully in the community after justice involvement and on increasing the effectiveness of the professionals and systems working with them.  Recognizing the transformational power of education, the Institute focuses much of its work on increasing access to higher education for people with criminal histories.  The Institute’s comprehensive and strategic approach includes direct service, research, technical assistance, and policy advocacy. Participate in interviewing Navigator applicants:  

  • Collaborate to create interview questions and take notes during interviews.
  • Conduct baseline assessment of each applicant to document applicant’s trajectory through course.
  • Prepare individualized student plan for career readiness and/or career advancement opportunity.
  • Responsible for initiating internal and external referrals for applicants /students and following through with documented outcomes.

Create/conduct workshops/events for Navigator Students and Alumni:

  • Create/conduct professional development/personal development and workforce networking workshops and events.
  • When needed procure and collaborate with consultants to facilitate events/workshops.
  • Prepare marketing material and outreach plan to invite students and alumni to events.
  • Document attendance of workshops and outcomes when relevant.

Internship Host site Growth and Maintenance:

  • Prospect and seek host-sties for Navigator student’s internship.
  • Create and maintain host-site MOUs.
  • Deliver presentations at partner organization
  • Monitor Navigator student’s internships success at site, collaborating with host-site for feedback when needed.
  • Document student placement and host-site development in database.

 Data Collection and Tracking:

  • Create and manage the collection and tracking of pertinent data including but not limited to:Work with team to review students/alumni trajectory
  • Student baseline assessment
  • Demographics
  • Prepare feedback forms for students and compile/analyze input from students and Institute staff
  • Prepare and track honorarium and stipend payment for students/alumni when needed
  • Distribute, attend and gather information for surveys and focus groups for Navigator Students and alumni when needed
  • Use salesforce to update and monitor all data collection for students, alumni, host-sites and workshops/events

Internal and External Relationship Building and Management:

  • Develop relationships with students through regular check-ins; provide guidance and support to help students in professional development, career readiness and workforce support.
  • Refer students for internal services within the Institute and to external services as needed
  • Coordinate with consultants/faculty and guest speakers to organize trainings/workshops and curriculum for students

Alumni Engagement:

  • Increase outreach and engagement opportunities with Navigator alumni network
  • Highlight a minimal of two Navigator Alumni monthly through social media or other provided outlets
  • Provide on-one-one assistance to Alumni when needed/requested.

Qualifications:

  • A track record of skillful program development, implementation and management
  • Undergraduate degree preferred with 3+ years relevant workforce experience
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and ability to produce polished work products
  • Ability to prioritize work accurately and independently
  • Solution oriented with a keen ability to fully manage the problem solving process, including gathering and sorting information, identifying potential solutions, and presenting thoughtful and well-articulated solutions
  • High level of diplomacy and professionalism as evidenced by demonstrated commitment to building and maintaining strong working relationships among diverse stakeholders
  • Strong customer service orientation for interface with students and other program partners
  • Excellent organizational and administrative skills—experience in academic or non-profit setting a plus
  • Excel, PowerPoint, and database skills required, Salesforce experience a plus
  • Knowledge of reentry and support services in NYC, preferred
  • Relevant life experience preferred
  • Commitment to anti-racism work and social justice.
