The Economic Policy Institute (EPI) is seeking a Deputy Communications Director, who is enthusiastic, independent and collegial and who will be responsible for helping oversee critical work of the department and bolstering EPI’s outreach and engagement with key audiences, editing content, boosting the number of active email subscribers, and helping to manage staff and the communication’s department’s budget. 

 

This position is based in Washington, D.C. EPI staff are currently working remotely due to the coronavirus pandemic.

 

What You Will Do 

 

Staff and budget management support


o  In coordination with the communications director, manage day-to-day management of all digital audience-building activity for the following teams: email program, media and social media outreach, and events. 

o  In coordination with the communications director, coordinate staff reviews of teams cited above, manage time-off requests, and ensure payroll management system, presently ADP, is up to date.

o  Manage communications department’s expenses reporting, working with finance to ensure all outlays are accounted for.


Oversee EPI’s email program

o   Oversee, develop, and revamp EPI’s email program, including EPI’s newsletter and action and fundraising emails, to expand the list and create more engaged and active email subscribers. 

o   Mentor staff on writing text and shaping the messaging and look and feel of emails. 

o  Track email engagement, including creating weekly and monthly reports, to help guide email marketing efforts.

o  Work with email team to build and clean up subscriber lists.

o  Work with email team to create email and social media campaigns to grow EPI’s subscriber lists.

o  Ensure email messaging is conveyed clearly and in line with EPI’s goals and mission.

o  Support efforts to migrate EPI’s email program from existing email platform to more impactful and effective options for EPI’s needs.


Provide editing support

o  When needed, substantively edit, copyedit, and/or proofread data-intensive content to ensure clarity, logical structure, factual accuracy, and adherence to Associated Press and Chicago styles. This includes editing tables and graphs to be easily comprehensible by non-experts, reviewing edits with authors and research assistants, and proposing titles.

o  Set editing plan for each assigned manuscript (light or heavy edit, fact check or no fact check) in consultation with the publications director, communications director, and author. Keep team members informed of progress.

o  

o  Edit short weekly email newsletter and write and/or edit occasional marketing materials, fact sheets, infographics, online features, blog posts, promotional copy for organizational brochures, and emails to EPI’s subscribers.

o  Collaborate with publications director and other communications team members to brainstorm how to address process challenges.


Who You Are 

We do not expect that every candidate will have this full range of experience, but the following qualities and experience are highly desirable: 

 

Required 

·        At least three (3) or five (5) years of successful management experience.  

·        Experience with building and overseeing successful email programs, including boosting email subscriber lists and building engagement. 

·        Experience tracking analytics for email programs, social and website traffic, and using key performance indicators to drive engagement. 

·        Experience editing, copy editing and proofreading reports and other content for clarity and factual correctness, preferably complex, data-heavy content.

·        Excellent written and oral communications skills. 

·        Exceptional attention to detail

·        Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.  


 

Preferred 

·        Experience taking in-depth research and helping to make it accessible to the widest audience possible, either via editing, or creating collateral to explain it with products such as videos, graphics, etc. 

·        Experience working for a nonprofit or think tank, preferably focused on policy change and/or advocacy (Hill and labor campaign experience a plus). 

·        Experience with WordPress and Monday.com, or other project management systems. 

·        Exceptional critical thinking skills: ability to decompose complex problems, prioritize issues, and implement sensible solutions.  

·        Passionate about quality, performance, reliability, and scalability. 

·        Understand and support the Economic Policy Institute’s mission to use the tools of economics to defend and promote the interests of workers in economic policy debates. 

 

Education: B.A./B.S. or equivalent professional experience 

Experience: 3–5 years of successful supervisory experience 

Management: Strategic planning, goal setting, mentoring, and celebrating successes 

 

Salary and Benefits 

 

EPI is a unionized workplace with the Nonprofit Professional Employees Union (NPEU). This position is not in the bargaining unit and reports to the Communications Director. 

 

The salary for this position ranges from $95,000 to $125,000, dependent on experience. 

EPI offers an excellent benefits package, including generous paid time off, as well as retirement contributions, medical, vision, dental, short- and long-term disability, and life insurance.
