Position Overview

The Chief Program Officer is a results-oriented and experienced leader with a track record of leading and managing teams to achieve transformative impact. They will be a thought-leader with experience and ability to work at the intersection of direct service and systems change. while executing on Tipping Point’s newly articulated vision and strategic plan, which maintains strong support for nonprofit direct service organizations, as well as  select special initiatives to affect change at greater scale. The Chief Program Officer will be an ambassador of Tipping Point’s program to external audiences. This position reports to the CEO and is a part of Tipping Point’s ExecutiveTeam (ET). The Chief Program Officer oversees the Program Team which consists of the grantmaking, impact & evaluation, and capacity building teams and will manage, coach and support seven direct reports. 

What will you do?

Strategy Formation + Oversight

  • Direct and oversee all grant making, capacity building, and impact & evaluation activities across four key issue areas: early childhood, education, housing and employment; as well as strategic initiatives. 
  • Work with team to generate ideas for new investment and/or partnership, and perform oversight to assess the impact and viability of new opportunities. 
  • Assess and communicate impact of grant making activities to key stakeholders. 
  • Be a strategic thought-leader with the CEO, ET, and program team to better elevate and integrate issues of diversity, equity and inclusion into all programmatic activities.
  • Assist with incorporating the voice of those we serve into our work. 
  • Balance humility and respect for the realities of on-the-ground anti-poverty work with rigor and accountability to achieve meaningful results.  

Management + Leadership

  • Provide organizational leadership by serving on Tipping Point’s ET Manage, develop and coach Senior Program Officers, Senior Director of Impact, Director of Capacity Building, and Director of Special Initiatives; establish and hold team accountable for annual performance goals and support identification of professional development opportunities to expand skills and competencies. 
  • Liaise with the Board and Leadership Council (LC) as appropriate; support Senior Program Officers in working with and presenting to issue area committees.  
  • Oversee coordination and alignment within the team as well as across teams, including management of annual grant making budget and implementation of consistent grant making processes and procedures. 

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Build and maintain relationships with other funders, partners, and grantees. 
  • Identify and evaluate opportunities to partner with key stakeholders that will enable Tipping Point to achieve its goals and advance its mission, through grantmaking and initiative work. 
  • Represent the organization to public audiences and external partners including donors and media, city government officials, etc.

What qualifications are we looking for?

Additionally, the Chief Program Officer must have:

  • A dynamic and robust track record of relevant professional experience such as experience working with non-profits, government partners, and philanthropies.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading and effectively building large, engaged teams responsible for diverse work; demonstrated commitment to the growth and development of employees.
  • Excellent communication skills, ability to present complex ideas to non-technical audiences, and ability to vary messages in a compelling way to different stakeholders.
  • Evidence of strong commitment to creating more diverse, equitable and inclusive programs and organizations.
  • Sophisticated knowledge of relevant social, political and professional trends and developments--specifically, understanding of issues of poverty, nonprofit landscape, and Bay Area economic and political factors impacting our work; and a proven track record of applying this knowledge to move toward impact.
  • Outstanding ability to gain the confidence and trust of others through honesty, integrity, and authenticity and build strong relationships in service of the mission while managing a keen awareness of privilege and power in relationships between individuals and organizations
  • A strong ability to understand the social and business landscape that Tipping Point operates in and sees ahead to future possibilities; translates possibilities into breakthrough strategies and paints a compelling picture of the vision and strategy that motivates others to action

Salary + classification

Tipping Point is committed to paying competitive wages. In an effort to increase equity, because we know that salary negotiations tend to have an unfair bias, we do not participate in a salary negotiation process for any candidate. We will make our best offer, and it will be the same regardless of the candidate. The annual starting salary for the Chief Program Officer role is $245,000. This position meets the exemption requirements as defined by state and federal law. Exempt employees are paid on a salaried basis, and their salary is intended to constitute their entire regular compensation, regardless of the number of hours they work; therefore, exempt employees are not eligible for overtime pay.

Hybrid Work Environment

Tipping Point is committed to the safety of our staff and to facilitating connection and community with one another. While we were remote for a year, we are moving slowly into a hybrid work environment: each team has identified 1-2 in-person days to be present in the office. Additionally, all staff are required to be in office two Tuesdays a month for staff All-Hands and team activities. All other days staff may choose to work in the office or remotely. Please note that in a constantly changing environment, Tipping Point may adjust this arrangement as it sees the need to.
