Opportunity

IRAP’s Policy Department is recruiting a dynamic and motivated Policy Assistant looking to embark on a career in U.S. refugee law and policy. The Policy Assistant will work closely with internal and external stakeholders to facilitate and further IRAP’s advocacy to protect and improve equitable access to lawful pathways in the United States and abroad. Furthermore, the Policy Assistant will provide administrative and programmatic support to IRAP’s Policy Department.

Responsibilities

The Policy Assistant will:

  • Work with Policy staff, other IRAP departments, clients, partner organizations, elected officials and their staff, and volunteers to support and further the organization’s advocacy work and other initiatives. 
  • Track and monitor legal, advocacy, policy, and media developments related to IRAP’s work.
  • Draft and edit advocacy and policy-related communications, such as action alerts, outreach emails, and blog posts.
  • Conduct research and analysis on relevant policy issues.
  • Provide administrative support, including events-related support, meeting scheduling, record-keeping, and note-taking.
  • Attend, take notes, and/or occasionally represent the Policy Department at internal and external meetings. 
  • Input data and maintain departmental databases.

Qualifications

  • A relevant academic degree is a plus, but not required.
  • Experience working with refugees and other forcibly displaced people directly, as a volunteer, through an organization, or through personal lived experience is a plus.
  • Demonstrated interest and motivation in working in a legal service or advocacy organization with a focus on forced migration and refugee policy.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and sensitivity to the interests and concerns of diverse forcibly displaced populations.
  • Highly organized and able to handle a variety of tasks, including office duties, note-taking, and research and writing assignments.
  • Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Multi-task, balance a flexible workload with a volume of ad hoc tasks, and have excellent time management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability and motivation to work and learn independently.
  • Comfortable learning to work with a variety of software suites, databases, and technologies.

Location

The candidate will work in or within commuting distance of the IRAP office in New York, NY or Washington, D.C.


Compensation

The salary of $60,000 is based on years of work experience, education, and internal equity. This position may be subject to a collective bargaining agreement.
