    BOSTON BY FOOT is a non-profit educational organization committed to inspiring locals and visitors to discover and appreciate the diverse stories of Boston by exploring the cityscape together.

    Boston By Foot seeks Program Manager to organize the activities of our 200+ volunteer tour guides and build structures and activities to ensure Boston By Foot, our programs, and our volunteers are performing at their best. The Program Manager plays a critical role in Boston By Foot’s Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access (IDEA) initiatives.

    Reports to the Executive Director. This is a full time position with a flexible, hybrid schedule. Occasional in-person and virtual evening and weekend work is required.

    Duties include:

    • Nurture relationships with Boston By Foot’s 200 volunteers; cultivate volunteers’ skills and enthusiasm for the organization’s mission, programming and goals
    • Advance Boston By Foot’s organization-wide Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access (IDEA) initiatives
    • Develop and coordinate incoming and ongoing training programs to further develop volunteer skills, in collaboration with other staff, volunteers and volunteer committees
    • Recruit and onboard incoming volunteers, with a strong focus on recruiting and retaining a diverse volunteer force
    • Prepare annual programming calendar, in collaboration with other staff and volunteers
    • Work with volunteers and volunteer committees to prepare, review and evaluate programming content
    • Assist in coordinating events such as new volunteer graduation and volunteer recognition events
    • Assist in creating marketing materials and promoting programing
    • Foster relationships with programming partners
    • Engage in special projects, initiatives and other duties to support the organization

    Qualifications and required skills

    A successful candidate should:

    • Have a friendly, patient disposition and the ability to support and collaborate with individuals with many different backgrounds and personality types
    • Be a self-starter and be able to manage multiple projects with a small, but fast-paced team
    • Be flexible and have a creative approach to problem solving
    • Have knowledge of and experience in public history interpretation and program evaluation
    • Have a passion for inclusive history, architecture and preservation
    • Have experience working with volunteers and/or volunteer experience
    • Have excellent written and verbal communication skills
    • Have strong computer skills and willingness to learn new programs and applications
    • Have a bachelor’s degree, or equivalent lived experience, and 3-5 years experience in nonprofits, museums, or other related field
