Position Description:

The mission of the Recreation & Community Programs team within the Innovations in Care (IIC) Department is to enhance the quality of life of people in the neuromuscular disease community by providing recreational programs for people of all ages that build community, foster growth, and provide enjoyment.

The Program Specialist will plan, manage, and execute best in class camp, recreational, and community experiences through the MDA Summer Camp and community engagement programs. S(he) will work to create consistent, impactful experiences for participants across the country. The Program Specialist will oversee the recruitment, acquisition and retention of program participants and volunteers through effective program planning, budget management, implementation, and evaluation of the overall program experience.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide day-to-day management of the Recreation & Community Programs Team, including overseeing training, tracking impact and managing performance matters
  • Provide oversight to program development, ensuring adherence to the national guidelines and risk management policies established
  • Collaborate with a variety of internal MDA team members to execute program priorities
  • Recruit program participants and volunteers to participate in community engagement programs through a comprehensive recruitment, placement, and retention plan to meet program and budgetary goals
  • Utilize the national framework to facilitate programs and activities for camp sessions and programs across the country
  • Oversee program management during program sessions
  • Develop a positive relationship with staff and volunteers to ensure the culture of the MDA camp experience is represented
  • Manage specific focus areas for national footprint of programs including but not limited to participant recruitment, logistics, medical management, training, and/or program development
  • Participate in annual review of evaluations, program development, training, and policy development to provide program improvement
  • Integrate national initiatives, donor recognition, and corporate support of department programs

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree required; degree in education, recreation or related field is strongly preferred
  • Minimum of 2 years experience working in recreation or community focused programming required
  • Experience working with non-profits/hospitals/programs serving specific medical populations is a plus
  • Experience in developing and facilitating programs for youth and families, including a demonstrated history of improving programs and increasing participation from the community
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Organized, detail orientated, responsive to teamwork, and customer focused
  • Possess a can-do mentality, be self-motivated, responsible and be a life-long learner
  • Flexible schedule, duties may fall outside of standard business hours
  • Available to travel and lead several weeklong programs in the summer (May-September), and occasional weekends throughout the year
  • Certification in First Aid, CPR, AED preferred
  • Hold a valid Drivers License
