The Farm and Ranch Freedom Alliance (FARFA) and the Council for Healthy Food
Systems (CHFS) jointly seek a part-time summer intern to support our communications
work. This position is ideal for an intern who would like to learn more about protecting
our small farms and rebuilding resilient local food systems, while getting to know like-
minded individuals and organizations.
FARFA is a 501(c)(4) nonprofit that promotes common-sense policies for local,
diversified agricultural systems and advocates on behalf of the thousands of small-scale
farmers and ranchers who produce food using sustainable and regenerative methods.
FARFA’s primary activities are:
-Lobbying to reduce regulatory burdens on small farmers and improve access to
local foods for consumers.
-Encouraging grassroots activism nationwide for common-sense food and
agricultural policies that support local food systems.
-Taking action to reverse the consolidation of our food system by large
corporations.
CHFS is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides educational programs relating to diversified
local and regional foods systems that are healthy, safe, economically sound, and
environmentally sustainable. CHFS’ primary activities are:
-Hosting educational events for small-scale farmers to help them succeed with
regenerative agricultural businesses. Current programs focus on soil health and
on successful direct marketing of animal products.
-Providing education for consumers about sustainable agriculture, local foods,
and the importance of systemic change.
-Co-hosting (along with FARFA and Texas State University) an annual
conference, the Southern Family Farmers and Food Systems (SFFFS)
Conference.
POSITION SUMMARY:
This internship will support FARFA in grassroots advocacy on the federal Farm Bill.
Duties include:
-Develop and post social media and email communications about what the Farm
Bill is, how people can be involved, and specific reforms advocated by FARFA.
-Conduct outreach to potential allied organizations.
The intern will also support FARFA and CHFS in hosting the 2023 SFFFS Conference.
-In June and July, develop and post social media and email communications to
reach established and new audiences to promote attendee registration. In
addition, support staff in collecting sponsor and speaker info/logos/ads for
programs.
-Attend Conference on August 6-8 in San Marcos and offer behind-the-scenes
support. This may include tasks such as speaker support, volunteer orientation,
technical assistance upon check in, answering questions, and packing up after
the event. (Attendance is highly preferred, but not required; we will consider
candidates who cannot attend the event.)
The Intern reports to the Executive Director and will play a pivotal role in helping both
organizations grow our impact.
This position is part-time, estimated 20-25 hours/week, working remotely. Weekly
schedule is flexible; some weekend hours will be needed.
The position offers a stipend of $300/week.
