Future First Organizing Fellowship

What would a world without nuclear weapons look like to you? Global Zero’s #FutureFirst fellowship asks you to imagine a future where we center people and the planet above war, stop rampant defense spending from draining our communities, and work together to achieve a world that has moved beyond the bomb.

Join us.

Over four months you’ll join other bold, intersectional activists to hone your skills as an organizer, become an expert in the ways the nuclear weapons system harms your own community, and develop strategies to eliminate them! Build power in your community by starting a BombSquad hub, holding candidates and elected leaders responsible for their policies, and harnessing the power of grassroots activism to challenge the strong hold these weapons have had over us. 

At Global Zero, we believe nuclear weapons directly reflect unjust power structures - from the undemocratic launch process to the billions spent every year, to the aftermath of testing that still impacts the health of indigenous and marginalized communities, nuclear weapons intersect with the issues progressive activists already care about, and we need you in this fight! 

Who Are You?

Someone who wants to make the world a better place, isn’t afraid to get into the trenches, and is passionate about peace, equity, and justice. You don’t mind having tough conversations and putting in the work to change opinions or challenge limiting beliefs, but you know how to center hope for a better future in your communication. If that sounds like you, keep reading! 

We’re seeking fellows to make a 4 month commitment to learning about the BombSquad, building hubs in their community, and fighting to radically reimagine what makes us each safe and secure by dismantling the nuclear weapons system!

Fellows also must;

• Live or attend college in one of the following states: Colorado, Georgia, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Utah or Wyoming. Citizenship is not required.
• Be at least 16 years old by September 12, 2022.
• Be available on Fridays from 1pm-2:30pm EST/10am-11:30am PST for cohort webinars, beginning September 16, and ending December 16, 2022.

Everything is easier with a friend, right? Applying with a friend, fellow organizer, or accomplice is not necessary, but encouraged! Our goal is to hire two fellows in five states. While all fellows must apply individually, be sure to note on your application if you are applying in conjunction with another applicant.  

At Global Zero, we understand that systemic racism and misogyny have contributed to a largely 'pale, male and stale' national security field, and we highly encourage Black, Indigenous, and People of Color, LGBTQ+, women and other underrepresented communities to apply. 

Worried you're not qualified? You are. There's no time for imposter syndrome. 

Get paid for your time, build key skills to become a stronger activist, and work to protect the world from the threat of nuclear weapons. We offer a $1000 stipend over the course of four months, ongoing training, and a network of support. You’ll get one-on-one coaching and a diverse network of other fellows and organizers. In Four Months You’ll…

• Learn about the role nuclear weapons have played in your community and build your organizing strategy;
• Start a BombSquad hub in your community or on your campus;
• Lobby your candidates or representatives with traditional...and not-so-traditional techniques;
• Learn emerging tactics in progressive organizing, and put them to use;
• Brainstorm with other fellows during weekly, one hour webinars to learn how the nuclear system intersects with other social justice issues.

Essay Questions. Please respond to all five prompts, 500-word maximum.

• What aspects of the fellowship gets you the most excited? Do you have any reservations?
• Why is intersectionality an important part of causing change?
• Tell us a little about yourself and your background, including why you’re interested in activism.
• Pretend you’re holding a rally for a cause you care about, what are some steps you would take to make it successful?
