Digital Democracy Political Analysis Intern- Ukrainian Speaker (m/f/d)

Democracy Reporting International (DRI) is a non-partisan, independent, not-for-profit organisation registered in Berlin, Germany. DRI promotes political participation of citizens, accountability of state bodies, and the development of democratic institutions worldwide.

DRI’s Digital Democracy team works to protect and promote democratic debate online that reflects human rights norms. Through our offices and projects around the globe, we monitor the effects of social media and other evolving technologies on public discourse; engage with governments, experts and tech companies for effective regulation; and train citizen groups on how to assess their local digital environment and debates. Our work addresses issues such as political disinformation, hate speech, inauthentic behavior, political advertising, platform design and algorithms.

Given the current war in Ukraine, we are seeking a Ukrainian social media analyst intern for our current project, “Social Media Monitoring for Ukraine”. Under the Country Director of Ukraine and in collaboration with the Data Analyst, you will support our social media monitoring of Ukraine by producing bi-weekly reports based on data from Ukrainian social media and finish the internship by producing a final report.

Your tasks

• Produce bi-weekly and in-depth report(s) on the social media landscape in Ukraine in collaboration with the Research Coordinator and Data Analyst; reports will analyse political discourse in Ukrainian social media and seek to understand trends on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Telegram
• Contribute ideas for social media analysis in collaboration with the Ukraine Data Analyst;
• Contribute insights and direct examples from Ukrainian social media including Telegram, Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, etc.
• Assist in programmatic input for launching and promoting the report such as contributing social media communications and press releases;
• Help in developing internal knowledge about Telegram channels and other popular social media platforms popular in Ukraine;
• Other related tasks as required.

Your skills and experience

• Currently enrolled in a master's or bachelor's in politics, policy, international relations, or a related field;
• Portfolio of written work in English on relevant topics (political analysis, social media analysis, international relations surrounding Ukraine);
• Prior experience in social media analysis;
• Good knowledge of the current political affairs within Ukraine and between Ukraine and the international community;
• Fluency in written and spoken English and Ukrainian, knowledge of additional languages (particularly Russian) is a plus

Desirable:

• Experience with social media monitoring and/or data visualization and data journalism;
• Prior experience of working in an NGO context
