The Center for International Policy Technology Policy Internship

As a technology policy intern with CIP, you will be an integral part of the Technology Policy Program and have the opportunity to participate in many types of project activities, including

qualitative research and open-source intelligence, aiding in the creation of fact sheets, policy briefs, and reports, and performing quantitative data analysis. In the course of this internship, you will gain a better understanding of technology, technology policy, and the intersection between

technology policy, United States foreign policy, and international security.


-The most important

qualification for this position is a deep interest in how technology affects

regular people, especially the marginalized. Any prior work or study on social

media, information ecosystems, or the effects of cybersecurity and/or AI on the

most vulnerable is especially valuable.


Though not required, the ability to fluently read one or more of the following languages

is strongly recommended:


-ANY language spoken in Africa, especially those spoken in multiple countries. 

-ANY South Asian language. 


-ANY East or Southeast Asian language, especially those spoken in multiple countries.

-Interns should have

a passion for open-source research and be comfortable reading through large

amounts of source material to find important details.

-Interns should have

a demonstrated passion for challenging status-quo thinking on technology and/or

foreign policy.

-Intern positions require a self-motivated, detail-oriented person with excellent writing, oral

communication, and organizational skills and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

-Interns should be comfortable working in an exciting and fast-paced environment, where specific

research focuses may change.

-Some interest in CIP’s other issue areas, especially security assistance, is highly desired.

-Though not required, a desire to learn more about the technical underpinnings of

technology policy and/or to learn more about data science and statistical analysis is a positive.


-Perform extensive research on technology policy topics, drawing on your own thematic or

geographic expertise, to contribute to reports, factsheets, opinion pieces, and issue briefs.  

-Track general interest and specialist technology policy publications for relevant material.

-Attend and take notes at relevant events and congressional hearings.

-With guidance, perform quantitative analysis of relevant datasets.

-Write blog posts.

-Conduct independent research on topics of your choice, with the aim of developing your own

publication (factsheet, issue brief, blog post, opinion piece).

-Assist staff members with ad hoc assignments and administrative duties as needed​.
