Organizational Background

The Food Research & Action Center (FRAC) is looking for a Legal Intern for their Washington, D.C. headquarters. FRAC works to improve the nutrition, health, and well-being of people struggling against poverty-related hunger in the United States through advocacy, partnerships, and by advancing bold and equitable policy solutions. To attain this mission, FRAC engages in research, policy analysis and advocacy, coalition-building, outreach, technical assistance and training, and an array of communications strategies. In partnership with hundreds of national, state and local nonprofit organizations, public agencies, corporations, and labor organizations, FRAC addresses hunger and food insecurity, and poverty as their root cause.

Responsibilities

The legal intern will support FRAC’s Director of Root Causes and Specific Populations on a range of legal issues pertaining to the elevated levels of food insecurity resulting from the COVID-19 economic and health crisis. The intern will conduct research related to addressing hunger among populations at particularly risk such as older adults, immigrants, and LGBTQ people. The intern will also support FRAC’s work to encourage health providers to screen and intervene to address food insecurity.

Skills and Qualifications

•       Law student.

•       Interest in social justice and food security.

•       Good oral and written communications skills.

•       Detail-oriented planning and implementation skills.

•       Good organizational skills. 

•       Self-starter: ability to work independently.

•       Excellent interpersonal skills; team orientation.

•       Experience with Google docs, sheets, and slides and Microsoft Office Suite products with ability to use Excel/Sheets for data collection.

Benefits

This internship can either be a paid position, at the rate of $17.80/hour, or done to meet course/program requirements for course credit.

Location

In response to COVID-19, all employees and interns currently work remotely, and, with the support of FRAC, this engagement will be completed remotely as well.

Start Date

The start and end dates of the internship are flexible; however, the ideal candidate will be available for a 10-week internship. The internship can range from 5-40 hours per week depending on the intern’s availability.
