Acerca de

Founded in 2004, Mother Africa is a grassroots nonprofit based in Kent, Washington. We serve community members from over 25 African countries and 10 Middle Eastern countries, who now reside in the small cities in South King County. These cities outside of Seattle have much less resources than the metropolitan areas of Seattle and Tacoma, yet are home to community members who face many barriers in making this region their home. Mother Africa's office is in Kent, where a high percentage of our communities live, and we provide services across the county and even into neighboring counties of Pierce and Snohomish.

Our mission is to support African immigrant and refugee women and their families to reach their highest potential. We operate as an umbrella organization to serve people from across the continent of Africa, as well as our neighbors in the Middle East, serving a wide diversity of cultures, languages and backgrounds. We address gaps in the current service system: programs and services provided to African communities in a way that works for them AND services provided by staff who represent our communities - because they come from the community themselves.

Our focus is on serving women and their families, with the woman at the center of our work. We serve all ages of the family including programs for youth ages 0-5, 6-17 and 18-24, adults, and elders. We speak over 12 languages in-house (French, Arabic, Swahili, Lingala, Somali, Somali Mai Mai, Amharic, Tigrinya, Shona, Kinyarwanda, Kirundi, Dari and Farsi).

We offer wide range of programs including: support for moms and babies, developmental screening, youth activities, homelessness prevention, case management and referrals, environmental justice programs, elders program, civic engagement, information sharing AND, providing all of these programs in the languages spoken by our communities by people who share their culture, background and life experience.

The need we fulfill is graceful integration into the large society where they prosper in all aspect of their lives. We address the social determinants of heath, assisting communities navigate systems and access resources to meet their housing, education, employment, physical and emotional health as well as equip the community members with skills to be their own advocates. We provide communities with opportunities to address system change.
