MMC Background
Minds Matter Chicago (MMC) connects driven and determined students from low-income families with the people, preparation, and possibilities to succeed in college, create their future, and change the world.
Volunteer as a Mentor
We match each of our students with two mentors that work with them for the duration of our program, from their sophomore through senior years of high school. This 2-on-1 structure is one of the things that sets Minds Matter apart and ensures our mentees’ success.
Mentoring sessions will be held from September through May and run from 12:30 – 2:30 p.m. on Saturdays (excluding regular holidays, winter break, and spring break). We expect to meet in person in the fall and will follow city and Chicago Public Schools guidance.
How You Can Help
MMC is looking for community-oriented individuals to make an impact in our students’ lives by volunteering as a mentor for the 2022-23 academic year. We are looking for people from all types of backgrounds, as diverse experiences are crucial to the success of our students.
The relationship you form with your mentee, as well as the academic and personal support you provide, will be an integral part of their college preparation and success. At MMC you will have the opportunity to work alongside your peers and expand your network with those who share your passion for giving back to Chicago.
Your Commitment
When working with youth, one of the key components to building trust is showing up.
We require a minimum commitment of 2-3 hours per week, including time needed for weekly session/lesson preparation and/or regular communication with your mentee.
We prefer mentors that are able to commit to three years within the program, working with the same student from their sophomore through senior years, because building strong relationships over time is vital for their growth and success. We understand that moving, new jobs, and changing circumstances happen, so we ask that mentors devote at least one year to working within the program.
