Plan International USA Board of Directors
Plan International USA is a girls’ rights organization. Powered by supporters, we partner with adolescent girls, children and young women to overcome oppression and gender inequality. We provide the resources that are unique to their needs and the needs of their communities, ensuring they achieve their full potential with dignity, opportunity and safety.
As a nongovernmental organization (NGO) 501c3, we rely on a dedicated group of volunteers to partner with executive leadership to advise, govern and advocate to ensure that Plan USA is best positioned to meet the challenges of today’s world.
Our current board is comprised of 15 individuals who represent a wide array of life and professional experience. This group includes two youth members from Plan’s Youth Advisory Board, who are active participants and provide input into decision making. We are committed to advancing diverse perspectives at Plan USA.
This is an exciting opportunity for inspired, globally-minded individuals who would like to be part of advancing our mission. As a leader in girls’ rights, it is our goal to unlock the potential of girls around the world. The COVID-19 pandemic is deepening global inequity, increasing extreme poverty and threatening to reverse years of progress toward gender equality. At the same time, conflict and climate change are resulting in more humanitarian crises.
Donors are focused on long-term sustainability and searching for more locally owned models for development. Organizations like Plan USA are working to change the way people in the U.S. engage with global challenges. Members of Plan USA’s Board of Directors have the opportunity to tackle these challenges and provide strategic input on how the organization meets the needs of the world’s most vulnerable girls. This includes participating in long-term strategy development, financial stewardship and oversight; providing advice and counsel to management; engaging young people; and advocating for girls’ rights and gender equality.
Plan International has an ambitious strategy to transform the lives of 100 million girls — so that they’re safe, educated and economically empowered — by the end of 2022.
To contribute to our global goals, Plan USA launched the We Are the Girls campaign in 2019 to raise $200 million by 2024. This ambitious campaign focuses on investment in adolescent girls to achieve gender equality. Through a diverse portfolio of innovative projects, the campaign seeks to create a world in which every girl is safe, educated and economically empowered. And, by implementing Plan USA’s unique girl-driven GirlEngage approach, We Are the Girls will ultimately impact the lives of 10 million girls.
We believe that adolescence represents a vast reserve of untapped potential. When we let young women take the lead, they’ll fight for change. When we invest in girls, we can eliminate gender inequality. Together, we can give young women a megaphone and amplify their message: “We are the girls who will change the world.”
Because Plan USA is part of a global federation, board members also have the opportunity to participate in the global governance of the federation through Plan International’s members’ assembly and international board.
About us and our mission:
Plan International USA works for girls’ rights. Harmful barriers like child marriage, human trafficking and gender-based violence are preventing girls and young women from achieving their full potential. Plan, along with government and private partners, fights against harmful gender norms and empowers young people to create positive change. We have worked in communities for more than 80 years and implement locally-led programming through approximately 240 offices around the world. Our technical sectors include education, youth economic empowerment, sexual and reproductive health rights, empowerment of girls and young women and emergency response.
We are fully committed to the safeguarding of all children and young people from all forms of violence.
Plan International USA is a girls’ rights organization made up of leaders, creators, innovators and change-makers who are working together to put an end to global gender inequality.
Board member expectations:
Those interested in applying to be a board member will play a critical role in the strategic growth and organizational development of Plan International USA.

We are looking for board members who are enthusiastic, eager to learn and align with our organization’s cultural values and mission as stated above. Interested parties are encouraged to contact Susan Benton, Chairperson of Plan International USA’s governance committee, at email@example.com.
