Open Arms Housing, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) organization that provides permanent homes, with ongoing support, to women experiencing homelessness and may need or desire mental health support and services. The Open Arms Housing, Inc. Board of Directors currently comprises of 13 professionals from the nonprofit and for-profit sector who are dedicated to the organization’s mission of using the

“housing first” model to end homelessness within the District. Recognizing that Open Arms Housing, Inc.’s serves a diverse group of residents and that advocating for homelessness eradication rights requires a diverse array of stakeholders, Open Arms Housing, Inc.’s own Board strives to attract individuals from across different walks of life and from different industries. The Open Arms Housing, Inc. Board has a healthy mixture of individuals inside and out of the homelessness advocacy world. In addition to the standard roles and responsibilities of a Board member, our Board members are active advocates and ambassadors for the organization and are fully engaged

in identifying and securing the financial resources and partnerships necessary for Open Arms Housing, Inc. to advance its mission.

Job Description

The Open Arms Housing, Inc. Board of Directors currently comprises of 13 professionals from the nonprofit and for-profit sector who are dedicated to the organization’s mission of eradicating homelessness. Serving on the Open Arms Housing, Inc. Board of Directors is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual who is passionate about the rights of the homeless. Board members

are expected to have the financial acumen to read and understand Open Arms Housing, Inc.’s financial statements and to otherwise help the Board fulfill its fiduciary responsibilities. Board members are expected to attend at least five board meetings per year. They are expected

to read Board materials in advance of Board meetings and to come prepared to ask questions and participate in discussions. Board members are expected to serve on one or more committees of the Board and to actively participate in committee work. Board members are expected to play an active role in securing the financial resources necessary for Open Arms Housing, Inc. to achieve its mission. Board members are expected to leverage personal relationships and connections to help the Fundraising Committee and staff identify and solicit potential funders, as well as directly

invest in Open Arms Housing, Inc.’s work by making a personal contribution each year. Board members are expected to responsibly represent Open Arms Housing, Inc. to their respective communities and to advocate for Open Arms Housing, Inc.’s mission, programs, and services as appropriate. Board terms last for one year and board members can serve unlimited consecutive

terms. Board members are not required to reside within the District of Columbia, but to have significant roots in the DC metro area.


Desired Skills and Expertise

We are currently recruiting for diverse leaders to join our board. We are especially looking for Board members with expertise in the following areas: fundraising, web development/online marketing, homeless rights advocacy, real estate development, finance/banking, communications/media, and Board development.
