Reserve Biodiversity Monitor and Surveyor (Undergraduate Research Mentor at Montiagh's Moss)

Undergraduate Research assistant required to join a team mentoring sixth form students carrying out Sentinus research placements at our Montiagh’s Moss nature reserve near Aghalee. This is a Special Area of Conservation managed for globally threatened species like marsh fritillary butterfly and Irish damselfly.

Summer research placements 2023

• Undertake a baseline survey of water quality of aquatic pools
• Compare and contrast marsh fritillary habitats to determine their ability to support marsh fritillary. You will see first-hand restoration of this wet grassland in practice, the different techniques used, monitoring techniques and learn all about why this habitat is important for biodiversity, pollinators and also valuable as a carbon store to combat climate change.
• Surveying wildlife on the reserve
• Input surveying data to the database or submitting it for another individual to input
• Following the RSPB policy for lone working and holding sensitive data
• We will offer training in ID and surveying skills to ensure that you are prepared for each individual survey

Commitment: For a 4 week period starting week beginning Monday 10 July between 10am-4pm, equivalent of 2 days per week - 1 day field surveying and the equivalent of 1day remote support by email and Teams/ Zoom gathering and presenting data and sourcing research to support field observations. Why we want you: We are looking for undergraduate Science /Geography students or trainee teachers with experience / interest in working with young people to mentor, with support from RSPB staff, these sixth form students as they work towards gaining an ASE Gold Crest award.

Requirements: Science background and working with young people is essential. Enthusiasm for outdoor working in conservation, a basic knowledge of the natural world, engaging approach, ability to give simple explanations and practical support with discussing data and observations.
