Volunteer Educator Program
Process: First meet with Manager of Outreach & Volunteers to determine best fit, and secondly, meet with Prevention Educators for additional screening. HAVEN serves elementary, middle, and high schools in 48 towns and cities and sees roughly 16,000 students a year. Prevention Educators play a unique role—there is an impact on the children, the parents, the teachers and the relationship with schools.
Desired Skills & Experience:
· Experience working with elementary children
· Experience with public speaking
· Teaching experience preferred
· Good sense of humor
· Ability to memorize scripts
· Willingness to work with puppets a plus
· Passion about the issues of domestic and sexual abuse
To become a Volunteer Educator:
· Commit to minimum of 1 year of service (school year calendar). Multiple year commitment is even better! At the end of your time as a Volunteer we ask you to do an Exit Interview with us.
· Complete relevant portions of HAVEN Core Advocate training in June or September
· Attend Educator training, offered in the fall. This training includes working with puppets for the Personal Body Safety program and an overview of our other programs
· Observe educators and train in the classroom
· Plan on additional preparation at home to learn roles/scripts and practice
As a Volunteer Educator:
· Supervision—Erica Skoglund, Manager of Education, will assign your supervisor.
· Sign up to co-facilitate a minimum of 4 full school days per month. Volunteer Educators will focus on classroom based K-4 elementary programs about personal body safety with puppets.
· Check in with Prevention Educators as needed for support and questions. They will offer guidance and supervision in the classroom.
· Volunteer Educators are also welcome to participate and assist HAVEN at Outreach & Fundraising events~ (Not required)
