    House Leader and Success Coach - Boys Hope Girls Hope

    Notre Dame Mission Volunteers, AmeriCorps (NDMVA) is seeking applicants to serve as a Full-time AmeriCorps Member at Boys Hope Girls Hope in New York City from August 16, 2024 - June 30, 2025.

    Boys Hope Girls Hope of NY is a non-profit, college preparatory urban boarding program that is committed to helping academically capable and motivated students reach their potential by providing them with a stable living environment, academic enrichment and support services to ensure their success through high school and beyond. BHGHNY scholars are motivated young men and women who are demonstrated leaders, and exhibit a genuine desire to succeed both in and out of the classroom. We partner with Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School located in Fort Green, Brooklyn.

    The Role:

    Boys Hope Girls Hope of New York (BHGHNY) is seeking House Leaders to support our academy programming. These individuals will be passionate about supporting youth development and committed to closing the opportunity gap for historically underrepresented youth.

    BHGH Time Commitment:

    4 days 2 pm- 10 pm and one night 10 pm- 6 am accompanied by at least 1 qualified staff member (overnight rounds broken into four 2-hour shifts throughout Monday- Thursday). Three Fridays per month 1- 6 pm and One Friday and One Saturday 2-6 pm each month.

    Responsibilities:

    • Live in the residence hall and serve as a positive role model and mentor for students.
    • Assist in the leadership of one of our four residential houses alongside our student house leads. Each house is comprised of 15 residents in hall corridors- not to be mistaken with individual homes.
    • Establish a supportive and inclusive community within the house, fostering a sense of belonging and camaraderie among students.
    • Developing a sense of brotherhood, civic engagement, social awareness, and winning growth mindsets in your house as per our Values and Staff Handbook.
    • Provide support and guidance to students, helping them set goals, develop study skills, and navigate social challenges.
    • Collaborate with the student house lead, team members, and administrators to ensure students are meeting expectations and receiving necessary support.
    • Monitor student behavior and address any disciplinary issues by our policies under the guidance of our Residential Director.
    • Organize and assist in leading house meetings, activities, and events to promote community building and student engagement. House Competitions and fostering a sense of brotherhood in your house.
    • Serve as a liaison between students, and parents, communicating regularly about student progress and concerns.
    • Co-develop and implement individualized success plans for students, identifying strengths, areas for growth, and strategies for improvement.
    • Support students in setting personal and academic goals, tracking progress, and celebrating achievements. Entering data into our Salesforce system.
    • Ability to learn best practices in student support, and academic coaching to continuously improve services for students.

    Qualifications

    • Associate or Bachelor's degree preferred
    • Candidate must identify as a man since this is a live-in position in an all boys residence hall.
    • Proficiency in Spanish preferred
    • Experience working with high school students in an educational or residential setting, or ability and willingness to learn
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
    • Ability to build relationships with students, parents, and colleagues
    • Knowledge of adolescent development, learning styles, and familiarity with house systems, or ability and willingness to learn
    • Commitment to fostering a positive and inclusive community for students
    • Flexibility, adaptability, and ability to manage multiple priorities and handle stressful situations with professionalism and composure
    • Excellent organizational and time management skills
    • Understanding of and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion principles, or ability and willingness to learn
    • Willingness to participate in ongoing professional development and training
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion
    • Physically able to climb multiple flights of stairs between residential hallways, community room, and dining hall.

    In accordance with federal AmeriCorps requirements, all applicants must be U.S. citizens or lawful permeant residence and consent to a criminal background check.

    AmeriCorps Member Benefits:

    • On-Site Housing
    • Living Allowance: Because Notre Dame- AmeriCorps is partnered with the Corporation for National and Community Service, we are able to offer our members a yearly living allowance which is distributed bi-weekly over the 11 months term. The pre-tax figure for 2024-2025 is $18,700.
    • The Education Award: Upon completion of a service term, AmeriCorps members receive a taxable education award of approx. $7,000. The education award can be applied to qualified student loans or future education.
    • Student Loan Forbearance: Members of NDA are eligible for forbearance of federal student loans during their term of service. This means that while a member is serving, they do not make payments on qualifying loans. In addition, the National Trust will pay the interest that accrues on the loan at the end of the term of service.
    • Optional Health Insurance: We provide optional free healthcare while you serve with NDA.
    • Child Care: NDA members may also be eligible for child care benefits. The AmeriCorps Child Care Program covers up to the state’s local market rate for child care fees and makes payments directly to the member’s caregiver.
