Job Title: Driver Volunteer Status: Part-time  

Reports to: Director, Volunteers Position: Volunteer 

 Description:  

WestFair Rides is a collaborative not-for-profit organization that manages ride choices in Westchester and neighboring Counties. WFR volunteers drive pre-registered residents aged 60+ and vision-impaired adults aged 21+ to medically-related appointments throughout Westchester County. 

 Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Follow all safety guidelines included in the Volunteer Guide and obey all traffic safety laws, including not using a cell phone while driving. Report any issues, concerns, accidents and/or incidents immediately to the office at 914-764-3533. 

  • WFR’s insurance company requires that all riders have a signed waiver on file with WFR. Home health aides or other caregiver may accompany, but only if they have signed a waiver in advance. WFR will notify the driver when additional riders are approved. 
  • Provide updated auto insurance declarations, driver’s license, and auto registration documents to the office as soon as received. 
  • Maintain a clean, comfortable and safe vehicle at all times. 
  • Wear an I.D. badge when picking up riders so you can be identified easily. 
  • Display the WFR Volunteer Driver laminated sign in the window whenever picking up rider. 
  • Maintain a professional relationship with the clients and riders. Do not solicit, accept donations or favors from clients. 
  • Notify the office immediately if an emergency comes up and you are unable to do your ride on that day. 
  • Keep private all personal and medical information shared by the rider. 

 Volunteer Management: 

  • Maintain good rapport with all volunteers, staff, clients and riders. 
  • Self-Assign rides in advance on AssistedRides.com whenever possible 

 Training: 

  • Complete an Orientation and Safety Training session with the Director of Volunteers.   
  • Complete the AssistedRides Orientation in order to log on to sign up for rides and receive emails.  
  • Participate in ongoing training activities. 

 Outreach: 

  • WFR encourages interested volunteers to assist in outreach to the community through social media, newsletters, testimonials and videos or as an Ambassador or Team Leader. 

 Qualifications/Requirements: 

  • Ability to treat each client, rider, volunteer, and staff member with dignity and respect. 
  • Interest in the needs and well-being of older adults and adults with disabilities and their caregivers. 
  • Valid NYS driver’s license. 
  • Current NYS Auto Insurance. 
  • Criminal background and motor vehicle background check by Intellicorp.net, at WFR’s expense. 
  • Proficiency in the English language required. Spanish a plus. 
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills. 

Physical Demands: 

Sitting for long periods of time, assist riders when requested. If able, fold, lift and put walker in vehicle. [If the volunteer is not able, a caregiver may accompany to manage the walker.]

Provide as few or as many trips as you would like — one ride a week, a month, or a year will make a difference!

 WE WILL:

Check your references

Pay for motor vehicle and criminal background checks

Train you in the use of our optional online ride management platform

ADDITIONAL BENEFITS TO YOU:

WFR will provide supplemental auto liability and volunteer liability insurances at its expense — these supplement your own personal policies

WFR will pay for AARP online or in-person Defensive Driving Class after 50 hours of driving for WestFair Rides

With prior supervisory approval, WFR will pay you $0.30 a mile to drive from your home to client’s home to client’s destination, return to client’s home and return to your home

WFR will provide access to a national network of vision and dental providers at discounted rates

 By becoming a volunteer driver, you will provide older adults in your community with a service that helps them to live independent, healthy and satisfying lives.
