Law and citizenship volunteer or intern in a tropical surf town in Brazil

ETIV is offering a fantastic new opportunity in 2023 for children wanting to learn about how their government works and how the laws work in Brazil. The objective of this program is theoretical and practical knowledge to students so that, knowing their rights and duties, they can fully exercise their right to citizenship, as well as provide the cultivation of an environmental and social awareness in a sustainable way. Also, we hope to integrate young people into society and develop a sense of belonging to the community in which they are inserted, sowing interest in social participation, critical consciousness, empathy, and solidarity. In sum, we want to help young people become agents of change within their communities. The target audience is high school students between the ages of 12 and 17 years old. 

Importance of the role:

One of the reasons why this is so important, is because rarely do young people have the chance to learn about their judicial system. This program offers a free opportunity to be more aware of the possibilities of action one can have on their communities, which is very interesting for smaller and poorer areas. 

You will be teaching topics  like Constitutional Law, such as fundamental rights, duties and guarantees of the citizen, as well as organization and functioning of the state.

Furthermore, we will be discussing Human rights topics, such as sustainability and the environment, the Statutes of the child and adolescent, the Statute of the elderly, citizenship exercise, etc.

The classes will be taught using theoretical principles and practical workshops that will stimulate critical thinking and logical argumentation of students through debates and other activities. Alos, we would like to propose visits to governmental establishments. 

Main Responsibilities:

• To support development of the curriculum while also preparing the lesson plans and documenting everything so that it can be re-used and built upon in the future.
• To take attendance and document outcomes including successes, challenges, and best practices for every class.
• To teach many of the core values that lay the foundation for ETIV's work, also listed on our website.
• To assist the Law program coordinator

Secondary responsibilities:

An important value at Etiv, is to allow the volunteer to grow and make use of all the strengths one may have. Therefore, we encourage all our volunteers to participate in our many projects and sometimes even create their own. You will need to assist in other programs if needed and participate in our monthly events. For example, we always plan a World Day event.

Requirements:

• Volunteers must work at least 20 hours per week
• Interns must work at least 30 hour per week*
• Basic Portuguese**
• Minimum 1 month time commitment
• Volunteers must be Brazilian
• Volunteers must have experience in Law or government

*Interns will receive a certificate of completion, which could be exchanged for university credit. Please refer to your university for more information

**For those who do not speak Portuguese, we do offer an audio class that you can listen to before arriving. We also have contacts with teachers down here in Itacaré.

Fees and pricing

This position is an unpaid and volunteer position that will allow the individual to contribute to this small community, learn Portuguese and Brazilian culture, as well as acquire organizational and leadership skills.

However, you are allowed to find your own accommodation, but a fee for training, materials, and a small donation to the Etiv organization will be required, totaling 300USD$.

Most interns can receive university credit while interning with our NGO.
