Minds Matter Portland-High School Mentoring/Tutoring (Saturdays)

Minds Matter is an organization seeking to transform the lives of accomplished high school students from low-income families by preparing them for college success. We do this through a tutoring and mentoring program that starts their sophomore year of high school and continues until graduation (and beyond). The goal is to get these deserving students into four-year colleges with as little debt as possible so they can pursue their dreams.

We are currently seeking mentors, tutors, and general support volunteers for the 2024-2025 Session - beginning in September of 2024.

CLASS LEAD: Class leads attend Saturday sessions form 12:30pm-2:30pm. They facilitate and lead the classroom through the days agenda as they help mentors and mentees develop a meaning full relationship. Additionally class leads meet virtually once a week for one hour prior to Saturday sessions to go over content that will be discussed that week and prepare.

TUTORING: Tutoring sessions take place in the morning from 10:00am - 12pm. We focus on strengthening math and writing skills. Additional one on one tuturing sessions offered to students as well and course specific upon student request. Tutors work with the students one on one or in groups to help them achieve success at school.

    • Current college students are welcome to apply for tutoring positions

MENTORING: As a mentor, you will be paired with a Minds Matter student and a co-mentor, both of with whom you will meet with weekly, from 12:30pm to 2:30pm, at the Minds Matter Saturday sessions throughout the school year. At the sophomore and junior sessions, you will assist the students in working on completing summer college program applications, application essays, and college/university selection in preparation for their final college application process senior year. You will also develop and challenge the students through engaged participation in activities such as our "What’s Going on in the World" exercise, a weekly current events discussion and debate series, financial literacy and executive functioning exercises.

What we expect from our Mentors:

    • Able to attend at least 75% of the in-person Saturday sessions
    • Be a graduate of a four-year university
    • Cultivate and maintain a relationship with your mentee
    • Act as a positive influence and a role model

OTHER POSITIONS: Beyond tutoring and mentoring, there are other support positions that are needed including:

    • Saturday Session Lunch Coordination and Support
    • Volunteer Recruitment Coordination & Support
    • Social Media/Marketing
    • Grant Writing Lead
    • Class Lead/Facilitator

There are also many volunteer-only get-togethers throughout the year, including happy hours and fundraisers. In addition, you have the opportunity to join additional volunteer teams and directly contribute to the strategic vision and direction of Minds Matter Portland. You will also have access to a strong local network of young professionals in a variety of industries.
