Awamaki, a non-profit in Peru that invests in Andean artisan women and connects them to markets, is seeking a sustainable tourism volunteer to assist our team in Peru with service groups, facilitating tourist visits to our partner artisans, and other work on our team. .

Awamaki invests in women’s skills, connects them to global markets and supports their leadership so they can increase their income and transform their communities.

SUSTAINABLE TOURISM GUIDE POSITION DESCRIPTION

If you’re looking for an international opportunity to utilize your skills while also collaborating with women in rural communities, Awamaki could be the place for you. Our volunteers play an essential role in our work. Volunteers have the opportunity to gain essential experience in business administration, fair trade, social enterprise, ethical sourcing and design, marketing & communications, and non-profit management.

As a Sustainable Tourism Volunteer, you would be expected to:

• Facilitate half-day and multiday tours bringing tourists to visit our partner artisans in their rural villages
• Assist with school service-learning groups bringing students to visit half-day and multiday tours bringing tourists to visit our partner artisans in their rural villages
• Help coordinate tour logistics such as bookings, transportations, and payments.
• Ensure tourist understanding Awamaki's sustainability standards and code of conduct
• Learn Quechua phrases in order to better communicate with people in the communities
• Work a minimum of approximately 6 – 9 hours per week at Awamaki's fair trade store in Ollantaytambo.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

An ideal candidate for this position would possess the following qualities:

• Possess strong communications and social networking skills
• Works well with minimal supervision
• Takes initiative in leading and developing tours
• Is respectful and knowledgeable of the indigenous Peruvian culture
• Spanish and English proficiency strongly preferred; Spanish proficiency required during the pandemic (at least through August 2022).
• Minimum stay is 4-6 months during the pandemic (at least through August 2022)
