Postgraduate taught study will extend your knowledge and skills and allow you to specialise in a subject beyond undergraduate level. A postgraduate qualification can enhance your career prospects or take your career in a different direction.
A taught route is ideal if you want a structured framework for your studies, with courses delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars and tutorials. With many courses available on full or part-time basis, you’re sure to find something to fit around your life and preferred style of study.
Durham offers a wide range of research degrees which can be studied on a full-time basis for one, two or three years or on a part-time basis for two, four or six years.
As well as conventional research degrees, we also offer innovative professional doctorates, giving you the opportunity to follow a structured programme of taught modules before undertaking an extended research thesis.
You will develop your own timetable of academic study under the supervision of a team of academic staff. Their roles are to help and support you to undertake your research project and complete your degree on time. The University ensures that your supervisory team has appropriate expertise in your area of study, and we have extensive training and mentoring programmes to support them to deliver high-quality supervision. When applying to study for a research degree you should consult with your academic department to check that a supervisor with expertise in your chosen subject area is available to support you.

Music at Durham
Our music societies are even more numerous than the theatre companies and span a wide range of styles.
Exact society numbers vary as old ones run down and new ones start, but it’s usually over 80. And of course, this means plentiful concerts and performances, as well as the chance to build your skills in Masterclasses. Our excellent Department of Music supports and encourages these groups, but leadership and the day-to-day running is all done by students - by no means all of them formally associated with the Department.
Theatre at Durham
There are several (27 at last count) theatre companies across the University all led and run by our students. These provide ample opportunities for performers, backstage workers and front-of-house crews working on the 90 or so productions each year.
Our creative students come together to produce and perform a diverse range of shows throughout the year. Everyone is welcome, regardless of their previous experience, so whether you want to be onstage, backstage, produce, direct, or even run your own theatre company, Durham Student Theatre (DST) aims to provide opportunities and support to help you do what you love doing.
Volunteering at Durham
Thousands of Durham students are volunteering in the wider community. Student-led and community-focused projects offer you the chance to learn new skills and to make a positive impact.
Covering a range of themes; Education, Environment, Sport and Physical Activity, Culture and Social Inclusion, there is an opportunity available to suit every interest.

Every year our international students complete their studies at Durham University and progress successfully into employment or further study, both in the UK and overseas. The outstanding academic programmes, along with diverse extra-curricular opportunities and access to work experience and placements plus the comprehensive careers help and support, can make you a highly competitive candidate in your preferred career.
You will be able to access 1:1 appointments, vacancies information, presentations, workshops, career fairs and online resources. These are very popular and relevant to all. In addition for our international students we have tailored information including details of overseas opportunities and employers, and platforms such as Student Circus. We deliver focussed workshops including the Durham International Student Employability Programme (DISEP) which is a collaborative project with colleagues from the Durham Centre for Academic Development. These interactive sessions cover the key elements of the job selection process including CVs, cover letters, online applications, interview preparation and assessment centres and go into great detail on language use and cultural expectations of employers.
If you are aiming to develop your career in the UK after graduation it is useful to know that many of the employers we work with are registered sponsors of the Skilled Worker visa and are keen to recruit talented students and graduates from around the world. The new Graduate Route visa is also an excellent route into employment.
Overall you can be confident that, whatever your long term plans and wherever you aim to be, if you apply yourself, get involved in everything university has to offer and engage with our support, you will have the best chance of success.
We offer lifelong support to all Durham graduates, regardless of what stage you are at in your career. This includes access to careers advice, as well as many of our online resources. As a graduate user of Careers & Enterprise, you can access one-to-one support, current vacancies and careers events.
